The Ministry of Health today said that as of December 04, 2021, three more men who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have died. This takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 1004.
The latest casualties are a man, 54, from Region Three whose vaccination status is unknown. The other two men were unvaccinated. One was a 62-year-old from Region One and the other was a Region Five man who was 82 and died on November 22.

The Ministry of Health is seeing a favourable increase in the administration of the COVID-19 booster shots to the adult population here following its roll-out last week.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, MP, said some 1,914 persons have thus far received a booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
βI think itβs now picking, up; a lot of people are coming forward now. Initially, it started out very slow. A couple of regions didnβt start their booster campaign on time, but I think thatβs getting much better now.β
Since the roll out of the countryβs COVID-19 vaccination campaign earlier this year, the AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, Sputnik V, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have been used. For persons who took the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, a booster shot of the Sinopharm vaccine is recommended 52 days after the dose. Those who took the Sinopharm vaccine, can take the same vaccine as their booster shot three to six months after the second jab. It is advised that persons who have been immunised using the AstraZeneca vaccine, can receive an MRNA vaccine, which should be taken six months after the second dose. A shot of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine can be used as a booster shot for the Sputnik V vaccine.
Currently, only a select group of persons are eligible for the jabs. However, in light of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, Dr. Anthony stated this is being reexamined.
βWeβre right now considering various options but as of now the requirements are that if youβre 50 years older, and you would have gotten your second dose about six months ago, then youβre eligible for a booster shot. If you are 18 years and older and you have a comorbidity or several comorbidities then you can get a booster shot once you have the time interval. If you are a frontline worker, and youβre 18 years and older, then you can get a booster shot.β
Previously, the health minister said several studies were used to guide the decision to begin the administration of booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccines.
Booster doses are currently available at all of the Ministry of Healthβs vaccination sites countrywide.

Molnupiravir is an orally available antiviral drug candidate currently in phase III trials for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. Molnupiravir increases the frequency of viral RNA mutations and impairs SARS-CoV-2 replication in animal models and in humans. Here, we establish the molecular mechanisms underlying molnupiravir-induced RNA mutagenesis by the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). In a statement, the Ministry of Health confirmed the deaths, which have taken the countryβs death toll from the virus to 1,016.

Kaieteur Newsβ Three women, from Regions Three and Four who contracted the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, have died, according to the Ministry of Health.
The ministry also reported that they were fully vaccinated and unvaccinated patients who died over a two-day period (December 11 and 12) while receiving treatment at a medical facility.
The women who died are: 79-year-old and a 70-year-old from Region Four and a 76-year-old from Region Three. As a result of this, the countryβs COVID-19 death toll has moved to 1,020.
Meanwhile, in its daily COVID-19 dashboard the ministry has recorded 62 new infections, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 38,554. The dashboard also shows that 14 patients are admitted into the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 43 persons in institutional isolation, 838 in home isolation and five in institutional quarantine. To date, a total of 36,639 persons have recovered.

Almost 800 new COVID-19 infections were reported today.
This is according to the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony who made this revelation during his daily COVID-19 update where he said some 788 new cases were detected. This he mentioned came after some 1,878 tests were done. This figure would be by far the highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic here in March 2020. It likely means that hospitalisations will rise.
βSo as we anticipated with Omicronβ¦ because of its contagiousness what we will see is an increase in cases especially if people are not abiding by the public health measures,β Dr. Anthony said. To this end he added that the countryβs positivity rate has also increased and now stands at about 41.95%.
While officials have not yet confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant here through genetic sequencing testing, authorities have said that it is likely that the variant is here based on the way the virus is spreading.
Socialising over the recent Christmas and New Yearβs holidays is also believed to be a major contributor to the spiraling number of cases.
Yesterday, 485 new cases of the virus were reported.

β President says situation under control
Kaieteur News β Guyana on Wednesday recorded 788 new COVID-19 cases, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank announced.
During his daily COVID-19 update yesterday, the Minister announced that out of 1,878 tests conducted, a total of 788 persons have tested positive for the virus. βOver the last 24 hours, we were able to detect 788 new cases and this came from, 1878 tests so the positivity rate has gone up so itβs about 41.95 percent, and that shows that we have a lot of people getting positive very quickly. We have anticipated that these numbers are going to double and we are seeing that happening right now,β the Minister said.
The total active cases in the country now stands at 2554 with Region Four having 1,648, Region Six with 338, Region Three with 206, Region Nine with 115 and Region 10 with 82. Over the pasts days, testing sites across the country have been packed with persons coming to do a COVID-19 test. Minister Anthony shared that getting tested just after being exposed might not give a person an accurate result.
He explained that going into quarantine first then waiting at least four to five days would give them a more accurate result. It was noted that the increase in cases was due to the new variant circulating worldwide. The Minister stated on Monday that health officials have suspected that the easily transmissible Omicron variant is present in Guyana.
βWe anticipate with Omicron, what will see because of its contagiousness is an increase in cases especially if people are not abiding by the public health measures and that is wearing masks and so forth,β he added.
Situation under control
Meanwhile, with the outbreak in cases, the Government has assured that the situation is under control and it does not call for any stringent approach at this time. This was assured by President Irfaan Ali and Minister of Health who were joined by some top health officials yesterday during an emergency media briefing on the COVID-19 situation.
While asking the general public to not panic, the President said βwhat we learn so far from the science and experiences is that vaccination with booster minimises the impact of this new variant.β
In their response to the situation, the President explained that his government has the capability and capacity to deal with the high incidence of hospitalisation and more cases. βWe donβt have control over the new variant and how it will operate but we have control over our own actions,β he added.
Also reiterating that the health system has the capacity to deal with these new cases was Minister Anthony and Dr. Fawcett Jeffery, Medical Director at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Dr. Jeffery said despite staff at the GPHC testing positive for COVID-19, the hospital still have what it takes to attend to patients and deliver services.
He noted however that more strict screening system and re-enforcing the existing guidelines would be put in place to safeguards staff as well as persons coming into the hospital.
It was advised by the Minister that persons should continue to wear their masks and abide by all COVID-19 protocols. He highlighted not only is the Omicron variant in circulation but the Delta variant is still around.

Kaieteur News β Yesterday, the Ministry of Health reported that five more individuals have succumbed to COVID-19. The deaths are that of four males β a three-year-old and 58-year-old from Demerara-Mahaica (Region 4) both of whom passed away on January 9 without their vaccination status being known, a partially vaccinated 48-year-old from Pomeroon-Supenaam who passed away on January 14 and a 61-year-old from Essequibo Islands-West Demerara who passed away on January 15 without his status being known β and a fully vaccinated 74-year-old woman from Pomeroon-Supenaam who passed away on January 13. Their deaths have brought the countryβs death toll to 1,086.
Also, the Ministry revealed in its dashboard yesterday that there are 1,065 new cases which have brought the total number of cases recorded to 50,121. A 4-month-old girl is among Guyanaβs latest COVID-19 fatalities.
This was reported by the Ministry of Health, Dr Frank Anthony yesterday in a press release which stated that the countryβs total deaths increased to 1,108 as seven more were reported.

The 160 new infections that were recorded came after some 1,301 more tests were done.
As a result there are now 3,144 active cases, 17 of whom are at the countryβs COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit. The pandemic death toll remains at 1188.

Kaieteur News β The Ministry of Health on Saturday reported that four more persons, who contracted the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, have died.
According to the Ministry, the fatalities are that of two men β a 53-year-old and an 81-year-old from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), and two women β an 89-year-old from Region Two and an 89-year-old from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who died between February 5 and 25.
As a result of this, Guyanaβs COVID-19 death toll has moved to 1,220.
Meanwhile, in its daily COVID-19 dashboard, the Ministry recorded 35 new infections, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 62,891. Out of that number, 33,934 are women and 28,957 are men.
A breakdown of the new infections per region shows that Region Four leads with 25 new cases, Regions Three and Seven with three each and Regions Five and Nine with two each.
The dashboard data shows that 10 patients are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, 30 are in institutional isolation, 702 are in home isolation and 12 are in institutional quarantine. To date, a total of 60,929 persons have recovered.

President Irfaan Ali on Monday approved an announced rollback of COVID-19 restrictions on social activities and distancing, while also making the wearing of masks in public spaces optional.
The new guidelines, gazetted yesterday, make no mention of restrictions on social activities and only provide protocols for handwashing and sanitation at businesses, where employees, customers and visitors βare encouraged to wear face masks.β The same provisions also apply to places of worship.
βWearing a face mask is not mandatory but in order to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, persons are encouraged to wear a face mask when the person is in public,β the new guidelines state.
The decision comes in wake of a steep decline in new COVID-19 infections and deaths over the past month. (The Health Minis-try on Monday announced one more death and three new cases.)
The previous COVID-19 guidelines, which were approved last month, had retained restrictions on social activities, including private parties, events at clubs, and receptions, although they appeared to be selectively enforced.
No proof of vaccination requirements
Quotas previously prescribed to restrict numbers at casinos, betting shops, cinemas are no longer in place and the updated guidelines also make no mention of proof of vaccination requirements for entry to public buildings. The latter was a point of contention between the government and some public servants, including teachers and health workers, who objected to the requirement, calling it a de facto vaccine mandate. In some instances, some public workers had been locked out of their workplaces where they could not show proof of full vaccination or produce a negative PCR test result.
Also absent is the previous restriction on visitation to quarantine or isolation facilities, prison or correctional facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizensβ homes and other care facilities.
While it was previously required that public transport operators be fully vaccinated, it is no longer a requirement under the new guidelines.
Director of the National COVID-19 Task Force (NCTF) Colonel Nazrul Hussain on Sunday told Stabroek News that restrictions on all social gatherings would be lifted but vaccination and testing requirements would remain in place to curtail the spread of the virus.
Hussain also said that the inputs of health officials would guide the decision making and that emphasis will continue to be placed on the need for vaccination.
Two years ago, measures were introduced to tackle COVID-19 resulting in restrictions on every-day activities.
Guyanaβs two international airports were closed for months along with schools, non-essential businesses, places of worship and other institutions.
Last month, the NCTF announced the lifting of the national curfew.
The announcement came one day after Presi-dent Irfaan Ali signalled that his administration was moving in that direction.
The curfew, first instituted in 2020, was in effect from midnight to 4 am after several adjustments.

In a statement, the ministry said the deceased woman, a resident of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), died on Tuesday. She had been fully vaccinated against the virus.
She was the 1,226th person to officially die here with the virus.
Meanwhile, the ministryβs updated COVID-19 dashboard showed 12 new COVID-19 cases from 1,738 tests. The dashboard also showed that there were 151 persons in home isolation, 5 persons in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 15 in institutional Isolation.

With COVID-19 vaccinations at an all-time low, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony is pleading with the unvaccinated to safeguard themselves and for those eligible to get boosters to come forward as the availability of WHO-recognised shots is not a problem.

The Ministry of Health on Saturday confirmed a total of 60 new COVID-19 cases.
The new cases were confirmed after 980 tests were conducted.
They comprise 16 new cases from Region Two, 7 from Region Three, 22 from Region Four, 2 from Region Five, 11 from Region Six and 2 from and Region Ten.
The ministryβs updated COVID-19 dashboard also showed that 2 persons were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal, 29 in institutional isolation and 987 in home isolation.
The countryβs death toll remained at 1,239.

The Ministry of Health yesterday reported that two more persons have died from COVID-19.The two victims were a 64-year-old male of Region Four, and another male, age 68, of Region Two. The victims who were both fully vaccinated died on June 23 and June 28 respectively.
As such, the countryβs death toll has now increased to 1,253.
A total of 104 new cases were recorded. The cases were recorded from Region One with 2, Region Two with 11, Region Three recorded 3, Region Four recorded 52, Region Six with 26, Region Seven with 6 cases, Region Nine with 3 and Region Ten with 1.The number of persons in the ICU has been stated as 2, while 32 are in institutional isolation and 868 are in home isolation.
