St Joseph beat UK School, Nations lose to Bajans

The 31st Annual Sir Garfield Sobers Schools cricket tournament commenced on a steaming hot Monday in Barbados with 10 first round games with all-rounder David Dick returning the best performance by a Guyanese, while St Joseph School High beat Birkenhead of the United Kingdom and School of the Nations lost to Harrison College of Barbados.
The 17-year-old Dick, who represents City side GNIC and should have been in Trinidad with Guyana’s U-17 side for the Regional U-17 tournament, made the most of his opportunity with Oakville Cricket Academy of Canada, who amassed the only 300 total of the opening round and had the only centurion.
Played at the Dover ground, Oakville beat Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Club by129 runs after Brian Brown made a commanding 107 and got support from Neil Johnson (79), Dick’s unbeaten 72 not out and Marcus Nandu (15) fired the North Americans to 312- 6 in 39 overs.
Daniel Ramsaywak captured 3-41 for the Trinis who were bowled out in 29. 2 overs for 183 as only Rickash Boodram (37 not out), Leon Basanoo (35) and Joshua Dookie (26) reached 20.
Dick returned with his crafty off spin to finish with 4-22 and got support from Steffaun Griffith (3-36) and Shemar Davis (2-30).
At Crab Hill, St Joseph High (Guy) beat Birkenhead School (UK) by 11 runs.

Birkenhead School 161-9 (40 overs) (Ashley Watkins 33, Armand Rabot 29, Toby Brown 15, Tom Corran 15, Jack Corran 10, Allen Andrews 10; Nkosie Beaton 2-19, Quinton Sampson 2-30, Stephon Wilson 2-30).
At the MTW ground, Harrison College off Barbados beat Guyana’s School of the Nations by six wickets after being dismissed for 83 in 34.2 overs despite 33 from Christopher Baljit, 16 from Ariel Tilqu and 15 from Mark Ramsammy.
Lijani Cherry (4-13) and Kristian Best (3-11) did the damage with the ball for the Bajans who replied with 84-4 from 21.5 overs with Lijani Cherry making 24 and Dominic Hart 20. Mark Ramsammy took 2-30 in a losing effort for the Guyanese. (Sean Devers)
