Harmon to contest for PNC leadership

https://i2.wp.com/www.inewsguyana.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/harmon3.jpg?resize=696%2C464&ssl=1Joseph Harmon

Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon has announced his intention to contest for leadership of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNC/R) – running against other party stalwarts such as Aubrey Norton and Dr Richard Van West Charles.

The announcement was made on Harmon’s Facebook Page on Wednesday when he updated his cover photo with a poster which reads “Joseph Harmon…Candidate for Party Leader-PNCR”.

On the poster, Harmon also promised “Leadership with a vision and compassion”.

https://i1.wp.com/www.inewsguyana.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/246253737_964313287548015_335706206764882774_n.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

While Norton and Charles have confirmed that they will be running for the top spot, currently Leader David Granger has repeatedly dodged the question on whether he will run again. Granger, however, had announced that he has taken a leave of absence from the Party effective September 1, but he did not indicate for how long.

Chairperson and Current acting leader Volda Lawrence also did not say if she will contest for the post.

Reports indicate that the PNC’s long-overdue Biennial Congress  has been set for December 11 with November 11 set for the nomination of the candidates.

Norton, who had challenged for leadership of the party and lost to Granger in 2014, now says that there is a need for a new political culture.

Charles, the son-in-law of Party Founder Forbes Burnham, is currently coming in for much criticism after it was discovered that as head of GWI he spent over $85M in parties over a two-year period. The former CEO has since justified the spending by claiming that it was an “investment” in staff.

PNC’s last biennial congress was in 2018, when Granger was returned unopposed as Leader of the party.

Roysdale Forde supports Harmon for PNCR leadership; says no room for ‘Black people party’ tribalism

Attorney-at-Law Roysdale Forde

Prominent Attorney-at-Law, Roysdale Forde Thursday night came out with a ringing endorsement of Joseph Harmon for the leadership of their People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), saying there was no place for a tribal or divisive leader.

Mr. Harmon has also publicly accused the governing largely Indo-backed People’s Progressive Party (PPP) of discrimination against Afro-Guyanese.

In hailing incumbent leader David Granger’s “leadership, sacrifice and dedication” for increasing the opposition’s support from 114,000 votes in 2006 to  139,000 in 2011 and 218,000 in 2020, Mr. Forde said “the record shows that he moves the PNCR forward and we cannot afford to have a leader who will take us backward.”

Mr. Forde urged party faithful to vote for a leader who would be able to consolidate the gains made by the PNCR rather than engage in race-based division and tribalism.  “Essential to consolidating the gains of the People’s National Congress Reform is recognising that the PNC is not a tribe . It is a political party in which all the citizens irrespective of race must know and feel that their interests are protected,” he said.

The lawmaker for the PNCR-led A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) stated that a leader that is perceived to be divisive could not advance the cause of the PNCR supporters and could not much more advance the cause and the interests of the people of Guyana as a whole.

“We must not use statements , we must not use euphemisms, we must not use the word ‘grassroots’ to mean a return or an acknowledgement that the People’s National Congress Reform is a Black people party. It is not a Black people party. It has not, it has never been and it must never be.  A leader that is tribal , a leader that is tribalist cannot  advance the cause of the people that support the People’s National Congress ,” he said.

According to Mr. Forde, Mr. Harmon has the capacity to be at the helm to defend and secure the interests of PNCR supporters without alienating supporters.

Aubrey Norton

Mr. Forde’s  comments about Black tribalism came days after Harmon’s main rival, veteran PNCR member Aubrey Norton found himself defending his stance in the face of perceptions that he was stridently pro-Afro Guyanese and could not be elected President of Guyana. “I don’t know why people see me as ethno-centric. I believe, unfortunately, when you are defending a right some people run down the road of saying you’re ethno-centric.  Now, I believe I have the right to defend any ethnic group. At this point of time, I’m defending African Guyanese who are being discriminated against by the PPP. I’m defending Indigenous Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese who the PPP perceive to be APNU+AFC who are under attack including burning down one of their buildings and so I believe that one has to defend all those who are being done wrong. If you consider that to be  ethno-centric, then you’re down the wrong path,” he has said on Politics 101 with David Hinds. Mr. Norton highlighted that when he had been a University of Guyana lecturer no member of any ethnic group had ever complained that he had discriminated against them. “There is not one incident, there is not one case for wherever I have been in government, be it in the Foreign Service, Ministry of the Presidency where I was cited for racism because I do not become involved in racism. I, however, am race-conscious and I believe all of us should be race-conscious,” he said. Mr. Norton is confident that he would be able to mobilise support from across all ethnicities.

https://demerarawaves.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/joseph-harmon-african-300x169.jpg

Attorney-at-Law Joseph Harmon.

Mr. Forde also said he considered the qualities of past leaders and they included a record of distinguished service to the PNCR, respect for authority and “none of them ever abandoned” the party. Over the years, Mr. Norton had found himself at odds with then PNCR Leader Desmond Hoyte and more recently with Mr. Granger.

Dr. Richard Vanwest Charles, who is also running for the PNCR’s leadership, had joined the Alliance For Change (AFC) in 2018, but later maneuvered himself back into the executive of the party that his late father-in-law , Forbes Burnham, founded.

Mr. Norton has recommended that the housing communities could structured, contracts awarded, establishment of all of the mechanisms of the Ethnic Relations Commission and electoral reform  to “attenuate the race problem”.

really?

all this talk about final nail and ppp in power for another 100 years is apparently not sitting well with donald ramotar. he thinks power can be taken away from the ppp by big multi-national companies interfering in our future elections - hello exxon

of course he didn't want to openly admit that it was outside interference that played a part in bringing down the coalition, but he's worried and he's warned his party

That is the type of statement to fool people ,Burnham died in 1985 .

The first election PNC led by Burnham came to power was under a coalition government with the United Force led by Peter D'Aguiar in 1964 ,which was free and fair using the PR system.

Apparently mathematics is not your forte.

The US turned a blind eye to rigging of elections in Guyana during Burnham period of government after 1964 ,also the 1985 election when Hoyte came to power . Many wasn't in agreement with rigging of elections including my self .

Did elections rigging in Guyana halted after the 1992 elections ? even the 1992 elections was questionable as free and fair.

For what reason this ‘outside interference’ would want to bring down the coalition? What’s in it for Exxon to prefer the PPP over the coalition? I bet you can’t answer that because you are just a sore looser.
Multi national companies and large corporations has been influencing elections outcomes in all democracies around the world including the USA for hundreds of years. The way these corporations/multi national influence is nothing new, using their money and resources to fund mud slinging, negative adds, dig up dirt on candidates that defies their interest and other strategy that are lawful[rigging is unlawful] in the game of politics. Ramoutar, a seasoned politician sensed that possibility of investors using their resources to backed some none PPP party supporters and puts out a warning. That’s all. Before the elections i suspected the PPP will rig the elections which was proven by the re-count where there are numerous missing documents from ballot boxes. Every PPP supporter shoving the irregularities under the carpet .

for the same reason american kept jagan's ppp out of power, it suited their interest. communism was not going to take hold in america's back yard. if it took rigged elections to do it so be it

what are those secret agreements guyana signed up with the trump administration? the ppp wouldn't say despite formal requests by the opposition to release that information, for example, the details of the shiprider agreement. and why has Jagdeo's reneged on his promise to renegotiate the exxon oil contract?

ramotar knows the tables will turn again but true to form you live in dreamland

I'll leave you with the following:

* 47 ballot boxes with missing statutory documents - POs and ROs responsible called to a meeting but never turned up

* ballots counted that were not verified

* voter impersonation - the dead and absent migrants voted

* CARICOM scrutinised only 18% of the ballots counted at the recount process and produced a report with strange language like "the elections were reasonably credible" and "GECOM cannot deliver credible elections" but concluded ppp won the elections conducted by the very GECOM

america and its friends turned a blind eye to all the above because it suited their (america's) interest

the ppp will continue to press for legitimacy from a section of the population in guyana but that would remain a fleeting illusion

I challenged you to give a reason why not only America but the entire world of observers would prefer the PPP over the coalition to conspire with the PPP to rig the election. And what shakebatty you come up with? You said it was because of “secret agreement signed with Thrump” again the freaking was PPP not in a position to sign anything because they were not in power. Are you for real? You comparing Burnham rigging? Burnham riggers didn’t need anyone to vote, Don’t pull that shit, he use to have a bunch of riggers like yourself stuffing ballots boxes with impunity. No observers. Just riggers.
The PNC leaches already used the courts to give themselves [with judges who ruled 32>33] two and a half years to suck the nation’s blood, Nandalall is right to use any legal recourse to avoid these judges who still lurking around to create mischief and waste another two and a half years with a ruling all the the CCJ that jumbie voted.

I am not sure which PNC propaganda website you pull the ‘reasonable credible’ thingy from, can’t find it on theCARICOM website.

America may not like drug dealers but they certainly don’t like rigging and riggers either.

So, Y’all seeing the CARICOM, OAS, ABC, EU, etc as a joke, huh, y’all need a good shrink to help y’all get use to it, help y’all understand rigging days are over and these authorities will make sure of that in the foreseeable future.

US gov’t official urges ‘inclusive dialogue’ on local content policy, resource fund

Pedro J Martin
Pedro J Martin

A United States government official recently made a public call for Guyana to have “productive, inclusive dialogue” on the issues of the local content policy (LCP) and the Natural Resource Fund (NRF), which Washington believes can foster opportunities for all Guyanese and benefit the country as a whole.

“We know these reforms are not easy, so through our U.S. Embassy in Georgetown, we are working to help foster communities that support strong investment in not just industries, but people,” were the words of Pedro J Martin, US State Department’s Acting Director of the Office of Caribbean Affairs.

“Taken together, the local content policy and careful investment from the Natural Resource Fund can foster opportunities for all Guyanese and benefit the country as a whole. We look forward to and publicly call for productive, inclusive dialogue on these important issues,” Martin said.

This post is like them robots in the startrek movie that constantly repeating ‘resistance is futile you will be assimilated’ …hahahahaha [maniacal laughter]

you can run but you can't hide. your ppp will have to face the numbers one day

we will not allow ppp rigging to be swept under the rug
