President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president, while Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will become the first woman and person of color to hold that office in the U.S. when the historic 59th presidential inauguration takes place Wednesday.
The theme will be βAmerica United,β an issue that was a central focus for the Biden-Harris ticket during the campaign.
The theme βreflects the beginning of a new national journey that restores the soul of America, brings the country together, and creates a path to a brighter future,β according to the announcement from the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
Between the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the nation and world since last year, as well as the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by a mob that sought to overturn the election results on Jan. 6, this yearβs event will look much different than any other in U.S. history.
For starters, there wonβt be the usual large crowd of revelers descending on the National Mall to watch in person.
In fact, due to the ongoing threat of violence in Washington, D.C. in the aftermath of the riot, Americans are being flat-out told not to travel to the nationβs capital. Both the National Mall and the Washington Monument have temporarily closed to the public.
But there will be a large National Guard presence at the event and across the city, as more than 20,000 troops have been deployed to bolster security.
The inauguration itself will also look different, with the typical parade and inaugural balls giving way to safer virtual celebrations.
Hereβs what to expect on Wednesday:
Entertainer and advocate Keke Palmer will host the the Presidential Inaugural Committeeβs first-ever livestream for young Americans before and during the inaugural ceremonies. The livestream include a special message from first lady Jill Biden and feature commentary from historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Erica Armstrong Dunbar. Doug Emhoff, Americaβs first second gentleman, will participate in a trivia segments question produced by the Library of Congress. Additionally, there will be a segment on presidential pets produced by Nickelodeon and excerpts of student voices from PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labsβ βWe the Young Peopleβ programming.
The event can be watched online at BidenInaugural.org/youth as well as the committeeβs YouTube channel.
Like their predecessors, Biden and Harris will take their oaths of office outside the Capitol Building. After, the newly sworn-in president will deliver his inaugural address, βlaying out his vision to defeat the pandemic, build back better, and unify and heal the nation,β according to the inaugurationβs website.
Coronavirus health and safety measures will be in place, and attendance will be limited, mostly to those currently in Congress. President Donald Trump will not be at the event, but former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are expected to attend.
Lady Gaga will sing the national anthem, and Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks will perform. Poet Amanda Gorman, 22, of Los Angeles has been chosen to do a reading at the inauguration.
This and other inaugural events will be carried live on KTLA and KTLA.com.
(Editorβs note: The inaugural committee has not released specific times for all parts of the event.)
Biden and Harris will then complete the traditional βPass in Reviewβ inspection of troops from all service branches, a longstanding military tradition that symbolizes the peaceful transfer of power to a new Commander in Chief.
The Bidens, Harris and Emhoff will then head to Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They will be joined by Obama, Bush and Clinton, as well as former first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.
Afterwards, Biden will receive a presidential escort to the White House, with every branch of the military represented. Among those taking part in the escort: the U.S. Army Band, a Joint Service Honor Guard, and the Commander-in-Chiefβs Guard and Fife and Drum Corps from the 3rd U.S. Infantry βThe Old Guard.β
It will be joined by the drumlines from the University of Delaware and Howard University β the alma maters of Biden and Harris β which will then kick off the virtual parade.
Bidenβs escort to the White House will be followed by the televised virtual βParade Across America.β The committee says the parade will feature dynamic and diverse performances from all 56 states and territories.
Actor, director, and producer Tony Goldwyn will host the parade, which will feature performers and athletes, including Jon Stewart, New Radicals, Olympians Nathan Chen, Allyson Felix, and Katie Ledecky, and viral sensation skateboarder Nathan Apodaca.
The dayβs festivities will conclude with primetime television special hosted by Tom Hanks that will feature remarks from the new president and vice president, along with performances by Jon Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.
Others taking part in the 90-minute event include Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will will recite a class work, and Kerry Washington, Eva Longoria, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, JosΓ© AndrΓ©s and Dolores Huerta.
More on the schedule of events can be found on the Presidential Inauguration Committeeβs website.
President Ali went on to say that Guyana stands together with the Biden-led administration in defence of unity, democracy and peace.
βYour call for unity and democracy are critical components of good governance which we share completely with you. We pray that God continues to bless the Government and people of the United States. We stand together with you in defence of unity, democracy and peace,β President Ali posited in his congratulatory message.
The Head of State had previously said he is looking forward to working with the new US President to confront critical and strategic matters of interest to the international community, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and to further strengthen elations between Guyana and the US.
President Biden defeated Donald Trump to clinch the White House following a cliff-hanger vote count at the November 2020 election.
US President Joe Biden taking his oath of office
The 78-year-old Democrat is the oldest U.S. President to take office; and after taking his oath of office, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts at the Capitol Building under heavy security and in the presence of a scant gathering of dignitaries, including three former US presidents, Biden vowed to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States in his inaugural address to the nation.
He also pleaded for unity in what has been described as a βdivided nationβ, and promised to be a president for all Americans, urging that they give him a chance.
βToday, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together; uniting our people and uniting our nation. I ask every American to join me in this cause. Uniting to fight the common foes we face: anger, resentment, hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence. disease, joblessness, hopelessness.
US Vice President Kamala Harris taking her oath of office on Wednesday
βWith unity we can do great things. Important things. We can right wrongs. We can put people to work in good jobs. We can teach our children in safe schools. We can overcome this deadly virus. We can reward work, rebuild the middle class, and make health care secure for all. We can deliver racial justice.
βTo all those who supported our campaign, I am humbled by the faith you have placed in us. To all those who did not support us, let me say this: Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart, and if you still disagree, so be it. Thatβs democracy. Thatβs America. The right to dissent peaceably within the guardrails of our republic is perhaps our nationβs greatest strength. Yet, hear me clearly: Disagreement must not lead to disunion. And I pledge this to you: I will be a president for all Americans. I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did,β President Biden reassured.
Wednesdayβs inauguration has gone down in history, as Vice President Harris is the first female, and first Black and South Asian person to become Vice President.
Upon taking office, President Biden immediately went to work and signed a raft of measures, reversing some of Trumpβs policies.
The executive orders signed sought to establish the mandatory wearing of mask and social distancing in federal buildings, a new White House office on coronavirus, bringing an end to a travel ban on visitors from some Muslim-majority nations, and reversing Trumpβs withdrawal of the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, among other things. Democrat Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States on Wednesday, assuming the helm of a country reeling from deep political divides, a battered economy and a raging coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 Americans.
With his hand on an heirloom Bible that has been in his family since 1893, Biden took the presidential oath of office administered by US Chief Justice John Roberts just after noon ET (17:00 GMT), vowing to βpreserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United Statesβ.
Biden, 78, became the oldest US president in history at a scaled-back ceremony in Washington that was largely stripped of its usual pomp and circumstance, due both to the coronavirus and security concerns following the January 6 assault on the US Capitol by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump.
The norm-defying Trump flouted one last convention on his way out of the White House when he refused to meet with Biden or attend his successorβs inauguration, breaking with a political tradition seen as affirming the peaceful transfer of power.
Top Republicans, including Vice President Mike Pence and the partyβs congressional leaders, attended Bidenβs inauguration, along with former US Presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton. Jimmy Carter, 96, was the only living US president to not attend the ceremony, citing coronavirus concerns.
Bidenβs running mate, Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, became the first Black person, first woman and first Asian American to serve as vice president after she was sworn in by US Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the courtβs first Latina member.
Harris used two Bibles, including one owned by Thurgood Marshall, the first Black US Supreme Court justice.
Thousands of National Guard troops were called into the city after the January 6 siege on the Capitol, which left five people dead and briefly forced lawmakers into hiding. Instead of a throng of supporters, the National Mall on Wednesday was covered by nearly 200,000 flags and 56 pillars of light meant to represent people from US states and territories.
