There is nothing irrational as telling you that you are selling a load of crap. That the value of sugar being produced is at two times the rate of what anyone is willing to pay is a fact. that we sell it at a discount for the sole purpose of earning foreign currency means we are paying two times their market value. For this economic relationship to be a loss leader you would have to show us that the monies earned from sugar is placed in areas that not only compensated for the loss but turns a profit. None such exist since we have never balanced the budget on income. We beg for most of what we spend. I do not have to tell you that the PPP were struggling to subsidize sugar. You know that implicitly since the were always selling NICIL assets to cover losses.

And yes I am angry at the rapacious thievery of the PPP and this kind of whole sale nonsense that t he feed the public is a kind of disinformation campaign to compensate for their gross incompetence. Sugar failed because they spent years of earnings on a plant that never got its sea legs. Instead they accepted t he white elephant from the crooked chines without warranty and begin to spend another 100 million to repair it and that never happened. Instead we have an abandoned asset what is cost us over 200 million for which we will never recover even a third of its value.

Worse, the began to disassemble the working 70 year old Albion plant that still produced a pound of sugar at 11 cents vs the skeldon factory ( when it worked) at 20 cents before the skeldon plant came on line. Why did they do that? The reality is they killed any hope of sugar ever being viable on the scale it was and the idea that they will reopen skeldon and Albion ( rose hall) is absolutely a deceptive campaign promise. They could not do it when they were in office and when the plants were not in the utter disrepair that they currently are.

Explaining the People’s Progressive Party’s plan to reopen three sugar estates, if the party wins the next General Election, Bharrat Jagdeo said that the cost to close the sugar estates is far greater than the cost to leave them open and subsidise them.
The PPP general secretary said that, prior to the government’s decision to close the estates, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had indicated that several studies should have been done, and that the PPP had advocated for those studies to be conducted

https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...e-profitable-jagdeo/

This is such an idiotic plan....to reopen the sugar states...the PPP leader is living in the stone age...and wants to keep Indians illiterate, unskilled and tied to a failing industry....the industry should be privatized, and land given to the workers who are willing to make use of it.

It will cost too much to bail out the industry every year its opened. It should be dismantled.

The government should provide for the laid off workers, with the oil money and train them and create programs that will give them skills for the future....

Only Sheldon-Man and KP can do this kind of Kane Kutta job today....

I am thankful for the cane cutters for me, my brothers and father were cane cutters. The sugar industry is responsible for the success of the majority of Guyanese who migrated.
I see some of your posts mention Skeldon_man. Bai dah buctah: Like dis ting get you mad. Do you sleep in nap sessions only? Don't go pounding your walls all night. Have your family nail down the windows so you don't jump out at night and hurt yourself. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Jagdeo is biting off more than he can chew when he said he will re-open the closed sugar estates. Now he is saying it may not be profitable. His next move is to tell Indo-Guyanese it was just a coolie promise to get votes. Your family cane-cutting days are over. If Jagdeo promise comes to fruition, he must invest in modern machinery to plant and harvest cane and get rid of cane cutters in general. Offer them alternative jobs. If they refuse, pay them off their severance pay and leave them to drink rum and kill themselves. You alone don't know about cane cutters and sugar factories. I believe this chapter should be close rather than beating old drums in modern time. Guyanese must adapt or get out of the way.

I agree. They are all here in America doing very well. Cane cutting days have been over about 30 or more years. We are all thankful that we earned a living and did not rob anyone. We made an honest living and proud of it. So you want your black man family to commit suicide too? Go and tell them and see what happens to your face and legs. You are one dumb F**k. Sugar workers were paid severance already by your PNC government. Don't you remember they could not pay them the whole amount and the sugar workers got their second part last Christmas? Well, I don't blame you. You are operating on half-brain mode.

We need to get off the the idea of leveraging political currency by assigning the possessive pronoun erroneously as in "your" and "my" governments. These are "our" governments. The "mine"  vs yours" usage intended  to generate pejoratives relies on the acceptance of our own racism as  liminal  in our definition of government.  That has to change so responsibility for incompetence and thievery are rationally addressed. Standing on the threshold of reason defined as operational only based on race means both parties screw us constantly. We are 70 years on from independence in a state blessed with great riches and beautiful in all its aspects except in the behavior of it's people when it comes to governing. It is the reason we are living in a history of 70 years of utter failure to govern.

I don’t know why people always compare the bauxite industry to sugar.  The economic and industrial realities are very different.

The bauxite industry did not produce ingots, but raw Alumina, which then needs to be sold to refineries/smelters.  Many of these companies have their own supply chain.  Demba  used to be part of Alcan while Bermine used to be part of Reynolds, now part of Altria, I think.

These operations were integrated in their supply chains.  Nationalization took them out and these companies sought other sources.

Notwithstanding that, Aluminum is the most recycled metal, as such, demand was robust as long as the need expanded.  Composites and other alternatives mitigated much of this new demand.

Sugar, on the other hand, was a fungible consumed finished raw ready to be used in a variety of industries. It’s easier to sell raw sugar than raw alumina.  Booker sold raw sugar as a commodity.

So the future of bauxite is best served being part of a integrated supply chain, thus the Chinese and Russians.   Raw Sugar can be sold as is!

I merely quote you and your Indo Nazi buddies.

The "itis" describes a condition induced after consuming a high carb diet.  Related to the stereotype of a drunken wife beating cowardly man. Ask any Guyanese which race they see when this is described.

My family was PPP. My mom was in the party. I spent much of my early years indoctrinated in the ways of the party and wrote essays that appeared in the mirror. The point is, I am older, not swayed by the adults around me and is intellectually apt to reason my way across what happens on the political landscape. The PPP has no coherent philosophy for development to date and what is being displayed is the same perverse race baiting to power

I have never supported the PNC. I advocated that people in Guyana remove the PPP from office since they seemed more enmeshed in rent seeking and graft than on development. Up to the point they were booted from office that government never sought one progressive ( their middle initial) strategy to formally ease our ethnic tension and to generate a summoning creed around which all of us can gather. Instead they said racism is a myth and that their government does not steal and is not nepotistic, contrary to the glaring evidence everywhere.

I was not sorry they were booted. It changed some things. BanShanLIn is not robbing us blind. BK and Beharry does not own the Marriot with their own private Casino as a PPP elite squat spot. Much of their entrenched patronage system was broken up and there is a starting over in a sense. That the PNC is mirroring the PPP in some ways is not unforeseen.

We know what absolute power does and if you check back in 2011 that is exactly what I say will happen. However, the margins for victory are small and smaller parties are testing the waters. It looks like our salvation from these two monster crooked parties is in the smaller parties who can boot them from office. It is better we flip flop between parties rather than have one in office for decades doing nothing but leeching off th e system for friends and family.

How will they block them? Most likely the PPP will win as the Coalition has run out of steam. And even if they lose do you think that the role of the AFC will be enhanced within the Coalition?

The choice will be Irfaan or Harmon.

A vote for the NCV was a vote for the return of the PPP. All that prevents this is the fact that Jagdeo selected Irfaan, who even many PPP supporters are repelled by.  Now with Canada querying this man the negative narrative about him gets even stronger.

Nothing that ANUG or the Amerindian party can do. Especially as I have seen no evidence that these parties are actually real and functional.
