Ruckus erupts at Linden PNCR office

NEWLY appointed party coordinator for the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Sandra Adams, is again at the centre of another alleged debacle involving Party supporters who are none too pleased with her appointment.

Reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle indicated that yesterday a ruckus within Party ranks escalated after Adams was tasked with management of the PNCR’s office inCo-op Crescent, Linden, and was entrusted as the sole key holder to the building.
Sources close to the matter related that displeased Party supporters ripped the newly installed door at the office off its hinges, causing something of a disturbance that caused police officers to be summoned to the scene.
An investigation into the matter is reportedly ongoing.

REASON FOR IRE
Several senior Party members were unavailable for comment up to press time.
Adams has drawn the ire of longstanding PNCR supporters primarily as a result of her appointment as Regional Party Coordinator by the party’s Central Executive last April.
She has since refuted that she was ‘gunning’ for the position ahead of Party stalwart and PNCR Member of Parliament (MP), Vanessa Kissoon, and longstanding member, Sharma Solomon.
However, the fact that Adams was favoured ahead of the Kissoon and Sharma has left many Party supporters significantly disgruntled.
The fact that Adams was favoured, according to some, unfairly so, was solidified when Kissoon was suspended last June by the Central Executive Committee, following a verbal confrontation between herself and PNCR General Secretary Oscar Clarke – which later led to disciplinary action being taken against her.
Additionally, yesterday’s incident follows what was a significant expression of supporters’ annoyance last October, when Party leader, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, was chased from the McKenzie High School, where he was holding a meeting with Party stakeholders.

SIDELINING LINDENERS
What has been described in the last few days as “Granger’s sidelining of Lindeners” was also the bone of contention during the PNCR’s 18th Biennial Congress last year.
During the vote for key leadership positions, the gates of Congress Place, the Sophia headquarters of the PNCR, were closed to many party members – several of whom were from Region 10 – even as the voting for new leaders was underway. The locked out members raised concerns over what they dubbed a “rigged” process to ensure that Granger remains in power.
The ensuing controversy saw Mr. Aubrey Norton, a contender for the PNCR leadership, dropping out of the elections after citing serious problems with the election process. As such, Granger was returned as party leader, unopposed.
Linden, for decades now, has been a stronghold of the PNCR.
Meanwhile, several observers within the PNCR commented to this newspaper that it is evident that the divide in the PNCR continues to widen – a dangerous state of affairs at a time when the country is preparing to head to early general and regional elections, on a date expected to be announced soon by President Ramotar.

We have a lot to be ashamed of

January 09, 2015

http://www.stabroeknews.com/20...s/01/09/lot-ashamed/

Dear Editor,

I am not Amerindian and I’m not from Aishalton, but I am Guyanese and I’m ashamed. I am ashamed of the misleaders of Guyana who use bullyism and violence every day to silence and suppress Guyanese citizens from freely exercising their rights. I’m ashamed of the deliberate and continuous distortion of facts and the insults to the intelligence and integrity of the Guyanese body public by people drunk with power and determined to maintain control no matter how many lies they have to tell and how many laws they break. I’m ashamed by a President and politicians who seem unable to dialogue intelligently and respectfully with their critics, resorting instead to ‘cuss and buse outs.’ I am ashamed of the lack of sanctions and accountability for those who break the laws of the land – from Presidential Guards who assault teachers asking questions and an Attorney General who spews violent threats, disrespects women, and misuses public funds, to ministers and other government officials who drive drunk and cause car crashes, abuse their subordinates, do little to actually meet the needs of the people, provide quality services or improve living conditions, and generally ignore the laws of decent society. Yes, there is a lot to be ashamed of in Guyana today, but none of it has to do with teacher Adams.

The Aishalton Village Council has upbraided Mr Adams for not adequately respecting the President – the “daddy of the country,” in their words. They have called for his dismissal from his position as Mathematics teacher at the Aishalton Secondary School and his removal from the community. I would like to take this opportunity to say a few things about respect and leadership. First of all, respect is something that must be earned through deeds that are fair and just. It is not to be given blindly just because someone happens to hold some title or seems to be at some higher level; the fact is that all people are born with the same rights and deserve equal respect. Those holding positions of power are public servants, put in those positions temporarily to serve the citizens of the nation. They are not gods or godfathers, just ordinary men and women with a job to do; simple as that.

Secondly, we the citizens of Guyana are not children to be led like sheep and told what and how to think. We are rational, intelligent adults with brains of our own and the ability to make our own judgments and decisions. It is clear, however, as we approach elections in Guyana, in this ‘silly season,’ that politics is once again trumping common sense.

Children in the hinterland regions of Guyana, unfortunately, continue to suffer from a lack of quality teachers. They are not afforded the same opportunities as children on the coast, and they routinely under-perform on national and regional tests. This is not a reflection of the abilities of the children, but a failure on the part of the government which is supposed to be providing them with qualified and competent teachers. Mathematics is a core, foundational subject, and for the Aishalton Village Council to call for the removal of Mr Adams – a trained maths teacher with many years of experience – from his position, is appalling. It shows a complete disregard for the welfare and education of the children of Aishalton and it is shameful that the supposed ‘leaders’ of that community care so little about the future of their children that they are willing to sacrifice them to the altar of ‘Big Daddy’ politricks.

Mothers and fathers are to be respected yes, but not if they’re abusing or harming their children, family, or community. Then, they are to be held accountable. It is clear to anyone who looks at Guyana today, that bullyism, violence, and dishonesty have become the norm. These are the lessons that the youth are absorbing and we can see the results clearly – ie, too many who lack love for self and others, who believe in might over right, who are unable to think critically and outside the ‘box’, who are loath to challenge the status quo, who live in fear, and who willingly and passively participate in their own destruction. Again, this is not the fault of the youth; children are not born liars, bullies, and abusers, these are all behaviours that they learn over time, that they are taught by the adults and the environment in which they grow up. For this, we should all be ashamed.

Children need adults who care about their well-being, not just about power and control. Children need mathematics teachers. Children need opportunities for advancement and positive development. Children need a government that truly cares about them and that doesn’t just pay lip service and play with their future. Children need to know that they can freely ask questions about issues in their communities, from those who are supposed to be serving them, without fear of being slapped or beaten. Children need to learn that government officials are being paid by public funds and that they must therefore be held accountable by the people. Children need to understand that power comes with responsibility, that freedom of speech is an inalienable right of all people, and that threats, lies, and violence are not conducive to or be tolerated in a just and healthy society. These are the lessons that we need to teach the youth of Guyana today. Then again, we will be able to take pride in ourselves. Until then, yes, we have a lot to be ashamed of.

Yours faithfully,

Sherlina Nageer

Displeased PNC supporters rip off locks from Linden Office; Granger says intruders will be dealt with

Oscar Clarke and Vanessa Kissoon

Oscar Clarke and Vanessa Kissoon

[www.inewsguyana.com] – The conflict within the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Linden faction escalated yesterday (January 08) when displeased supporters broke off the locks of a newly installed steel door at the Party’s Linden Office.

As a result of the refusal by APNU Parliamentarian, Vanessa Kissoon to hand over the keys to the building, newly appointed Party Coordinator, Sandra Adams installed the steel door.

However, this decision was not met with much satisfaction from some PNC supporters within the community, who took matters into their own hands and broke the locks. Adams was not present at the time of the incident.

General Secretary of the PNCR, Oscar Clarke told iNews during a telephone interview today that the matter is engaging the attention of the Police, since it is not clear as to exactly who broke the locks.

Clarke explained that Kissoon never handed over the keys to the building to him even though she was instructed to do so since last year.

“They are saying as long as Ms Sandra Adams is there, the keys won’t be handed over,” the frustrated Clarke told iNews.

He believes that the few displeased PNC supporters are using the opportunity to put pressure on the Party.

“These are some people who are using the political opportunity of knowing that elections around the corner of putting pressure on the Party Executive,” the General Secretary said.

Clarke said that as far as he is aware, Kissoon is still in possession of the keys.

“Why they are holding on to this office and make it center piece of controversy is strange to me.”

The General Secretary noted that the Party hopes to find an early resolution to the issue, given the fact that is in an internal matter.

Meanwhile, PNCR’s Leader, David Granger during an invited comment to iNews made to clear that the building belongs to the Party and that intruders will be dealt with.

“There might have been some intrusion… any intruders will be dealt with according to the constitution,” Granger said.

Kissoon had accused Clarke of assaulting her on June 20, 2014 at the PNCR’s Congress Place Headquarters, Sophia when he asked her for the key to the Party’s Region 10 Office.

She was subsequently suspended from the Party by Granger and remains on suspension.

I wonder why the PPP spend more time focusing on the APNU and less on themeselves.

Do you know that since Trotman and Ramjattan left their respective parties almost all of the top defectors to the AFC come from the PPP?  That is why that party has emerged as Indo party II and is gunning for PPP supporters.

Who have been the folks who defected from the PNC to the PPP.  Thugs like McLean, Lumumba, Hamilton, and Nascimento, and maybe Gouveia, who I feel quite confident was drinking Hoyte soup in that era.

Indeed the failure of the PPP to address its own internal rift between the Jaganites, and the Jagdeoites will be its demise.  The Indian base is shrinking. Region 6, the area most loyal to the PPP has seen its population shrink by 25% since the PPP came into power.  The PPP has not been able to make inroads into the African and mixed voting bases, even as the latter is the fastest growing.  They have done as well within the Amerindian base as they are likely to, and indeed many of the younger and more educated Amerindians are not impressed, and the violence threatened against this teacher in the Rupununi will hasten the departure of many Amerindians from the PPP.

So what is your problem?  Do you know that if APNU works hard, and that is merely getting back the votes which they had as recently as 2001, they can BEAT the PPP, which has seen its support base DECLINE in EVERY election since 1997.

Tell you what Kissoon and Solomon will much prefer to fight for the spoils in a WINNING party than fight for crumbs in a losing one.  So dont fool yourself that they will not work hard to ensure a PNC victory, and then demand their reward.

I agree,  if the PPP had not changed course with Jagdeo, it would have been a strong party for Guyana, like in the 60s.

Jagdeo was too young and inexperienced.

There might still be hope, if they can get rid of Jagdeo's influence, but he is such a vindictive jerk with a strong negative influence for the young.

Moral decay is on the rise and there don't seems to be any stopping under the present government.

Linden had the highest voter turnout for the P.N.C in 2011, it seem Granger had shown grave disrespect for those constituents since then,at its peak was when they when looked out of congress place and allegedly was fired upon.

Most recently Granger's presence attracted a sizeable protest in Linden.

The residents of Linden are seeing Granger's true colors.

They will still vote PNC. Those who are disenfranchised by the PNC will stay home. Linden(McKenzie) was named after Burnham. PNC/APNU=Burnham.

Why would any black person of sane mind vote against a government that openly has clear racist policies against black people?

Who in their right minds would associate with the PPP if they were black? only criminals and thieves associate with the PPP.
