Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools tourney St Joseph’s High & School of the Nations register wins

The 31st Annual Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools 40-over cricket tournament continued in Barbados on Tuesday with both Guyanese schools being in winner’s row, while defending Champions Antigua Schools defeated Oakville Cricket Academy by five wickets on day two of the competition which is named after Barbados’ only living Legend and the world’s greatest all-rounder.
At Bank Hall, St Joseph’s High beat Bajan School St Michael’s by seven wickets to record their second win in as many days. Stephon Wilson picked up 3-25 and got excellent back up from Kennard Moonsammy (2-4) and Nkosi Beaton (2-18) as St Michael’s were bowled out in 33 overs for 112.
Jared Lovell (30), Kai Patrick (20) and Codie Ramsey (15) offered token resistance before the Woolford Avenue School raced to 113-3 from 19.5 overs on the fast outfield. Moonsammy led the way with 33, Wilson made an undefeated 31 and Timothy McAlmont chipped with 27 to see their school to an emphatic win. Kyle Edwards had 2-24 for the home team.
At the Wayne Daniel ground, School of the Nations, who lost their first game, rebounded to beat St Leonard’s Boys School by 86 runs after being dismissed for 178 in 34 overs. Mark Ramsammy 33, Ariel Tilqu 25, Christopher Kowsilla 20 and Vishal Persaud 19 led the fight as Nigel Desriveres (6-33) and Aleyandro Davis (3-37) shared nine wickets between them.
However, St Leonard’s batting failed to cope with Ramsammy who had an excellent day at class by taking (5-17), the first five-wicket haul by a Guyanese. He got good support from Bheem Hardyal (3-16) and Kowsilla (2-7) as only Kacey Williams (26) and Davis (15) reaching double figures.
At the MTW ground, Oakville Academy, the only team to reach 300 on the opening day, were blown away for 97 in 28.4 overs with Neil Johnson top scoring with 28.
Bryan Browne who has the only century so far, only managed 23 on Tuesday, while Guyana’s David Dick, who stroked an unbeaten 76 in the first match, fell for a duck as number 10 batsman Steffaun Griffith (13) was the only other batsman from the North American side to get to double figures. Asher Cornelius ripped the heart out the Canadian batting with 5-20.
Antigua Schools reached 100-5 from 34.1 overs as Marcus Nandu, the son of former Guyana Leg-spinner Arjune Nandu, taking 2-19 and Dick, who’s participation in this tournament was made possible by a collaboration between the Georgetown Cricket Association and the Oakville Academy, conceded just 14 runs from his eight overs.
Michael Marcellin (32), Kenny Sutton (18) and Rasheed Henry (18 not out) were made to work hard for their runs but in the end the 2016 champions handed the North Americans their first defeat in the tournament.
