Jagdeo made a conscious decision to close the sugar factories in Demerara when he INSTRUCTED his nephew -in-law Robert Persaud to sign the agreement with the Chinese to build the Skeldon factory. We must remember the machinery for the Skeldon factory was rejected by an African government which thought it was going to be a dud ! Jagdeo knew from the start that the Skeldon factory would fail thus hastening the death of the sugar industry as we knew it. He through his " house slaves " started to sell off GUYSUCO lands to their friends and family I anticipation of the the closing of the industry.

Jagdeo doesn't have the guts nor honesty to tell the workers at Wales of his true role in the failure.

The Chinese are broke, and no one else is interested in sugar, and certainly not with workers who have a high propensity to be absent and to go on strike.

Best thing is to divide the lands, and give priority to the workers to engage in some other type of farming.

The PPP is threading water. This is pure opportunist agit prop from Jagdeo. he created this debacle in sugar. In his entire tenure he did not try to sell more black strap molasses as a commodity, or facilitate ethanol/methanol production as additives to our gasoline or take any pro active steps to salvage sugar. Robert even failed to fill in all the required paper work for the EU subsidy and that as a consequence got bounced. The PPP as completely failed the sugar industry. There is no other option but to downsize to ease the debt load.

I am very disappointed by Jagdeo's speech. His message was also ambivalent. When he said govt is harming PPP supporters can be interpreted as a policy to harm Indo Guyanese. This is simply not true. He has to take most of the blame for the crisis in sugar. Stromborn also said they failed to complete the paper works to draw down on the EU short-term subsidy. I think Comrade has a point. There is a pattern here. These deliberately tried to kill the sugar industry. He went to Wales and could not outline what he would have done differently.

So why isn't Jagdeo not focusing on developing alternate forms of agriculture, and ensuring that displaced workers get help in transitioning to this.  It can include a waiver of lease expenses for a few years, with the lease costs then used against the gradual purchase of the lands.

Jagdeo is not running the country.  It is the new government's job to develop alternative forms of agriculture or business entities for the displaced workers.  This protest was called for by those workers who will wake up and have to wonder how to feed their families.

And Jagdeo never screamed "black man bad".  Come on now you seem to be a bright guy.  If you can get racism out of your vocabulary you might be a force to be reckoned with on this site.
