BREAKING NEWS: Raphael Trotman elected House Speaker ; Backer is Deputy

Raphael Trotman

Attorney-at-Law and Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Raphael Trotman was Thursday elected as Speaker of the National Assembly, ending weeks of speculation and negotiation between his party and the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

This is the first time that an opposition member would be Speaker of the 65-seat National Assembly.

Members of the incumbent Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) voted along party-lines for Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran but its 32-seat plurality was not enough to win the simple majority.

That was because APNU's 26 members voted along with the AFC's seven seats.

Backer was the lone nominee for the position of Deputy Speaker.

Immediately after, Trotman's first order of business was the administering of the oath of office of all Members of Parliament.

The era of passing bills in Parliament with corrupted contracts like the Fip Motilall's Amaila Falls Road Contract is OVER. I would support gridlock IF the old Jadeoites try to pass similar corrupted bills. I trust Ramoutar will stop the corrupted bills from Freedom House before it gets to Parliament.

Now that AFC gets their speaker, the next order of business is to pass the budget. Is APNU-AFC will honor the tripartite agreement to work swiftly on national importance? Or, are they going to scratch their asses over Trotman.

Trotman didn't turn over the party leadership to Ramjattan as he was supposed to do. They had agreed to rorate the Leadership every 2 1/2 years but it didn't happen.. Now he made a deal with the PNC to just the same... promises were made to Moses which he as Party Leader failed to comply with. The kind of speaker Guyana needs...

Today is a great day for Guyana and all Guyanese. When Jagdeo took over I thought he would have done great things for the country, but he turned out to be a corrupt Leader in bed with drug lords. My advice to Ramotar, start cleaning house and you could be greater than Burnham and his good friend Cheddi.
