Upper Demerara got off to a rollicking start with a 4-1 crushing of East Bank, while East Coast and Essequibo Pomeroon had to settle for a 1-1 draw to open their campaign in Group A of the inaugural GT Beer $6M ‘Sunday Night Super Cup’ Inter Association football championship last Sunday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. Among those who were present at the opening night were President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Wayne Forde, who along with Region 10 (Upper Demerara/ Berbice) Chairman Renis Morian watched the night’s matches. Upper Demerara were led to their impressive result with a youthful line up as Denzil Fordyce opened their scoring in the 25th minute from a beautiful clip from national schemer Clive DeNobrega going down the right flank into the goal mouth where Fordyce headed home the go-ahead goal. As the home team continued their positive play, Kellon Primo would get the second goal of the game two minutes from the half time break when DeNobrega, who controlled the mid-field, made a good move with another feed. This time it would be Primo to finish with a good shot from outside the 18 yard box that flew past the East Bank goalkeeper, who never and a chance. Holding a 2-0 advantage, the Upper Demerara side were playing with good measure against their opponents who could only give spurts of collective play and ten minutes into the final half Fordyce was again able to convert, for his brace, from a one-two play with the brilliant scheming DeNobrega in the 55th minute. This dominance of the home team was evident on a night they showed composure and another goal came in the 60th minute when DeShawn Dey got into the act of scoring from a squared ball from DeNobrega for a tuck in for a 4-0 advantage on the green outfield. East Bank would pull one back, however, and this came from lax defending as Delroy Dodson came through the middle to score in the 79th minute as the scores read 4-1 for Upper Demerara. In the opening game earlier that evening, Essequibo Pomeroon and East Coast played to a 1-1 draw with goals in that game coming from Romario Walcott for Essequibo Pomeroon in the 25th minute, a lead they enjoyed until the 65th minute when Shamar Scott got the equalizer and the game petered out to a stalemate 1-1. On Sunday, two more matches involving the other four teams in this preliminary round play, Georgetown, Bartica, Berbice and West Demerara will play in the round robin format to decide the two teams from each group of four who will move to the semifinals and then the final.
