Got two squash from my sister's garden

Stewed with beef and potatoes.

Of course, ate it with nice hot oil-rotis!!

The taste of the home-grown fresh squash is so different from ones bought in the stores.

Hy VB..nice to see u..guess wht..i have 2 squash vines n they bore abt 8 HUGE GIGANTIC ones..all r bitter( i think i put too much epsom salts..hahaha as it was bearing sheer man flowers n i was told to put epsom salts..so things bitter more than karaila…the other vines died , bearing 1 each but they got yellow n β€˜swingy’ after they grew abt 8-10 ins.  I have another vine in front of the yard n i got 3 smaller ones which r not bitter…)

Lynn

My fave greens r:-

-Katahar curry with plenty fresh coconut milk..can be with shrimps or without! N cooked until it looks like β€˜old-cloth’..lol ie well done..mushy!

- seim curry with nice coconut milk, with or without shrimps, i esp with nice eddoes, but aloo is good too

- β€˜Fry-squash” as we say back home..  stewed with plenty tomatoes n shrimps or chicken with nice HOT oil roti

i love all greens though …

not so fond of fry baigan (love it curried with eddoes, chicken or shrimps or jhandi style n of course i love baigan choka)

not very fond of bhaji..but it is healthy so i eat for that reasoni eat a lot of spinach in soup or quiche

One way of dealing with the bitter is to peel them and rub with salt or cut them in pieces and soak in salt water for a few hours or overnight. Rinse thoroughly and then cut them up into smaller pieces for cooking.

Thnx Mits bhaiya…

these r more bitter than karaila..

n they r huge!! Gigantic…

i have 4 giant sized ones on vine..

i tried cutting the ned n putting salt for few days..i peeled them deep too

it is  bitter down to the center

an indian guy said that there is a variety of bitter squash soi googled it..

@Lynn, Get rid of it. I just learnt about it being toxic. Anyways, I don't have the space to plant squash.

Yes..i googled it because my hubby’s friend from India told him thatthere is a variety of bitter squash..

wow..everyday we learn eh!!

I donthave much space for gArden ..as my yard is mostly shade!! Insects eat out all the leaves except kariaila n squash..n n=1st time i planted 1 karailla, the squirrels stole all 12!!

They pick the baigan too..

so we stick to tomatoes n squash ..lol

sad thing is i had 3 other squash vines..2 died (planted in buckets) n 1 beside the driveway..that hear 3 n died.

The bitter tree gave me 8 giant sized ones..like 1 can cook 4times!!..never ever seen squash this FAT..more than 25 ins in diameter n 34-37 ins long

Lynn, we must be twins....Katahar, seim and squash are my fave also, cooked exactly as yours. My hubby like fry baigan, but me, kids and grands all like it curried with chicken!

My sister got bumper crops of squash and baigan this year and I benefited greatly! Also got lots of tomatoes from her.  I do like my fresh tomato and cheese sandwich for lunch or even dinner.

This is the first year in the last 45, when we bought our first house, that I did not plant a garden.  I am retired.....but got to busy in the spring to plant a garden. go figure.

BTW.....I have never heard of or experienced bitter squash.

Garden season as once again coming to an end.

My older sister picked all her green apples and made achar.  She saved some for me.....will collect on my next visit to Brampton

Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer!

Well today..er..yesterday (this is 1.15am) I made curry from scratch using no curry powder, I used Cham's recipe, ohhh man it came out good. I cheated by tossing in a can of split pea soup..here comes Cainsta Dahl along with a couple loaves of bread baked from scratch by the one and only...me, that came out mmmm good but I find the crust a bit hard. No eggs were used, I also used honey instead of sugar.

Cain the Baker

First time I baked something I can eat. (he said as he left)

Wht’s the no-curry powder recipe??

U used turmeric only??

my cuz fron NJ doesnt use CP..only turmeric (i have never eaten her curry though..)

yeah man i shud try curry cassava too..i think it will-be yummy if it is  dried down..

Lynn

Never eaten cassava curry.

Today, I cooked chicken chowmein.  All 5 of my grandkids like it and as per them, Nanee cooks it the best Taking some over for them tomorrow.

Also cooked bora/aloo, dhaal and naan (with yogurt)

found this really good recipe for naan on line and now my hubby prefer it to both sada and oil rotis.

I just saw a naan recipe on fb..using yeast, yogurt n milk..baked in oven n brushed with garlic n cilantro after cooked

n i said i must try this version

So true ..some days i dont know wht to cook..n sometimes I dont feel like  eating anything

whn i feel like this..i go for dhal n rice n FRY EGGS.. I always have dhal (i cook a big pot n freeze in small containers

i use it with my stir fry veggies as i dont use salad dressings or sauces with veggies plusmy veggies r crunchy , so a dip in lil dhal is yummy n healthy(protein/fiber)
