Following their 20-run loss to Windward Islands in their opening fixture on Tuesday at Gilbert Park, Guyana will be looking to rebound when they take on Leeward Islands today at the Brian Lara Stadium as the Windies regional U-17 50-over Cricket tournament continues.
Guyana defeated the Leeward Islands in their previous two meetings and played unbeaten in last year’s tournament; winning three games and two being affected by rain.
Undoubtedly Guyana are one of the strongest teams in the tournament boasting five players with previous experience, but while there is not much cause for concern with their bowling, the biggest worry for the management team is the batting. Their batsmen are talented and once they get going then Guyana can be unbeatable, and their title hunt largely depends on how well they apply themselves since poor shot selection resulted in them being bowled out for a meager total in their opening game.
Skipper Ashmead Nedd, his deputy Kevlon Anderson, Junior Sinclair, Kevin Omroa and Pradesh Balkishun are more than capable spinners, while their fast bowlers Qumar Torrington, Reaz Khan and Gevon Schultz can hold their own, but they must be backed up in the field which is another worry for the management unit. Windward Islands top scorer Kemani Melius was put down once off Torrington and twice in the same over off Nedd, while a few other catches went a begging.
Opener Alex Algoo has the ability to hit the ball hard and looked untroubled in his first game at this level until he gifted his wicket away. A lot will depend on him and Sachin Singh to give Guyana a good start so that the middle order, which includes Anderson, Kevin Christian, Orlando Jailall, Sinclair and Alphius Bookie to capitalise.
The Guyanese team were set to practice at the Brian Lara Stadium yesterday, but the rain prevented the coach from doing any outdoor work with his charges.
The pitch at the Brian Lara Stadium, which is hosting its first regional tournament, has been good for batting with club teams here scoring in the excess of 190 in T20s. The Leeward Islands won their opening game against Jamaica by five wickets at National Cricket Centre.

Meanwhile, in other games Trinidad and Tobago will play Jamaica at Gilbert Park and Barbados will face Windward Islands at the National Cricket Centre.
