I spent two years in the Guyana National Service. Many of my Indo colleagues at the time were afraid to join because of rumors. If was the best thing one can do for his/her country. I have no regrets.

Many girls were being RAPED in the National Service. If wanted a job, no bright enough, people resort to N/S, upon completion you get a certificate that entitles you to a government job if available.

It was not the same as the Army, more relaxed and a bit more training in trades. National Service was used for cheap manual labour, they were used for clearing bushes, building roads, cleaning trenches. I know Norman McLean very well, Mr. Spare Parts.
