… but probe continues for UGSS

The University of Guyana (UG) Administration has said the gang-rape allegations of a female student on campus are completely false.
According to a statement issued by UG Sunday, its investigations concluded that the student was not sexually assaulted however she was “intoxicated.”

“Investigations by the University of Guyana Administration have not revealed any basis to conclude or suspect that she was sexually assaulted as alleged in the article carried in the Guyana Chronicle, on Saturday, February 27,” the statement read.
According to the University, the student was taken to the medical centre on Friday afternoon where she was diagnosed by medical personnel as “intoxicated.”

Probe continues
Nevertheless, the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) is still continuing its own investigation into the matter.
UGSS President Joshua Griffith told Guyana Times he has been receiving similar information but he expressed that the findings are not exactly substantive.
Griffith said he wants to at least speak to the female student to hear her version of the story before making a definitive conclusion on the issue.
“After all, we are here to represent the students,” Griffith said, noting that no stone should be left unturned in this investigation.
Police have confirmed that no official report was made.

Security
Meanwhile, the allegations brought to the fore the burning concern of security on campus. The UGSS president had stressed time and again the need of better security on campus.
“Security has always been a major concern on campus and we, the students, are always the ones who suffer and are affected more at the end,” he stated.
UG in its statement noted that it will continue to place safety and security of its members and visitors to the campus as a high priority.
The university said it is currently pursuing several measures to enhance security and will continue to exercise maximum care and due diligence in providing a secure environment for students and staff on campus.
Allegations
The state newspaper had reported on Saturday that a UG student overhead a group of male students describing in graphic details how they gang-raped the female student. According to the newspaper article, the student said he does not know the names of the male students who allegedly committed the act, however he knows their faces very well.
