A 44-year-old bus driver who is accused of raping a three year-old girl was yesterday charged and remanded to prison.

William Gomes, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that during May 2016, he engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of sixteen.

Remanded to prison, William Gomes

Minutes after the accused was taken into the court lock-ups, police officers forced their way into the lock-ups and rescued Gomes from the other inmates who dealt him several kicks and punches about his body. This was after learning that Gomes had been remanded for raping a little girl. While being escorted to another holding area, blood was seen gushing from his mouth and several missing teeth were seen in his hand.

According to information, the child had been left in Gomes’s care by her mother, and when she returned home, she began crying. Upon checking her, the mother observed that she may have been sexually assaulted.

The matter was then reported and the accused was arrested and charged for the offence.

Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore strongly objected to bail being granted to the accused citing the serious nature of the offence. The prosecutor also cited the penalty the charge attracts and the fact that a child is involved.

The accused was remanded to prison and was instructed to make his next court appearance on February 13, before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
