Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has announced that about 1,000 residents of Region Five (Mahaica- Berbice) can get temporary government jobs geared at providing some relief to households.

As he announced in other regions, the provision of these temporary jobs is part of a countrywide plan of providing relief through the provision of a total of 80,000 temporary jobs.

And the Vice President, during a government outreach on Wednesday, said that people will be able to earn $40,000 a month through these jobs.

And he emphasised that these jobs will not only see people cleaning drains and canals; instead, men and women can find jobs in offices and in their communities.

“For people who don’t have any jobs, we have set aside money in the regions to hire people,” Dr. Jagdeo said.

Importantly, he said that there has been overwhelming interest in this initiative already. For example, on the Essequibo Coast where 800 of these jobs were promised, Dr. Jagdeo said that over 2,000 applications were received.

Meanwhile, with Guyana badly in need of trained, technical workers in the oil and gas sector, the Vice President promised immediate training to the residents if the interest exists.

“If you find maybe 400 young people who want to train in operating heavy equipment, electricians, plumbers, etc… I can immediately get a training programme started for them,” he said.

In so doing, Jagdeo explained that a temporary training facility can be established in the region until Guyana’s new technical training centre is opened at Port Mourant in Berbice.

And the Vice President said that if residents do opt for this training, it is possible for them to gain employment within months.
