1,200 sign petition for removal of Region Nine REO
Approximately 1,200 persons residing in Region Nine, Upper Takatu, Upper Essequibo, have affixed their signatures to a petition requesting the removal of their Regional Executive Officer (REO), Carl Parker.
This was revealed at Thursday’s press conference hosted by the main Parliamentary Opposition, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown.
The Party’s Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira, told media operatives that there have been a number of complaints from Regions won by the PPP with regard to the performance of elected Regional Executive Officers.
These include the call by residents to have the Region Nine REO removed. Copies of the petition, she said, have been sent to President David Granger, the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, the Ministry of Social Cohesion and to the PPP/C.
The Chief Whip stated that the residents have listed 14 points to the President with regard to Parker’s performance. These points, she said, include sexual harassment, discrimination against Amerindian staff, meddling in the affairs of the Amerindian Village Councils, total disregard for the Regional Democratic Council by overriding decisions by the Regional Democratic Counci, failure to provide requisite financial reports and interfering with the duties and functions of the Regional Chairman’s office etc.
“This is a rather important development in the sense that the communities are obviously reaching levels of total frustration, “Teixeira said.
Kaieteur News was informed that the number of signatories was a little over the 900 mark however, when Carl Parker was contacted yesterday afternoon, he told this publication that the number was actually 1,200.
Asked to comment on this issue, Parker replied, “I have no comments for the time being, until I would have spoken to a lawyer”.
