Native Tongues Taqueria (Calgary, AB)

Calgary’s Native Tongues Taqueria recreates Mexican street food using fresh ingredients. While their menu offers dozens of mouthwatering options, it’s the tacos that truly shine. Enjoy the simple suadero, a classic beef brisket taco with white onion and cilantro, or the bold pollo adobo, which combines roast chicken, adobo sauce, pickled red onions and cilantro. If you’re dining as a group, order their special tacos al carbon, which are grilled over charcoal and served family-style.

La Taqueria (Vancouver, B.C.)

While Vancouver's multiple La Taqueria shops don't stray far from the classic offerings of tacos and burritos, they deliver an abundance of options. Among their dozen or so tacos, the slow-cooked carnitas are a favourite, as are the al pastor tacos, which contain pork that's been marinated in achiote chilli and topped with fresh pineapple. The atun taco of seared albacore tuna, fuses Asian and Mexican flavours with the addition of wasabi mayo and chili ponzu alongside pico de gallo and cabbage.

Tacofino (Tofino, Vancouver & Victoria, BC)

Tacofino’s humble beginnings started with a food truck in Tofino, BC, where they dished up fresh fish tacos to hungry surfers. Today, the ever-expanding empire includes three food trucks scattered across B.C., four restaurants in Vancouver, one in Victoria and a catering unit for all your taco parties. Their signature tacos have remained the same: fresh, local and surprisingly healthy. Try the classic fish taco made with pacific cod and topped with salsa and chipotle mayo, or the original lamb birria taco with herb salad, arbol chili, pickled nopales, and preserved lemon zest. Vegetarians have loads of options here, too, including the sweet and spicy eggplant taco, squash and cauliflower tostada and veggie scrapple taco made with a squash and chickpea fritter, tomato herb salad, and lime crema. (Note: Menu varies at each location.)

Molli CafΓ© (Vancouver, BC)

This small, unassuming taco shop may be one of Vancouver’s best-kept secrets. Molli CafΓ© offers a selection of tacos at just $2.75 each. The cochinita pibil features melt-in-your-mouth marinated pulled pork, cabbage and pickled onions. Homemade chorizo takes the spotlight in the papas con chorizo, topped with potatoes, sour cream and cilantro. No matter the time of day, there’s always a line at Seven Lives, but it’s well worth the wait.

Tres Carnales (Edmonton, AB)

When three friends in Edmonton longed to recreate the dishes they had eaten in Mexico, Tres Carnales was born. They offer fresh and bold tacos, tortas and quesadillas. Try the beef short-rib taco that's been braised with morita chiles and tomatoes, or the classic al pastor. If you’re looking for lighter options, the marinated cauliflower taco is a safe bet, as is the hongos mixtos, a blend of sautΓ©ed mushrooms, garlic and queso fresco.
