2011 presidential candidate jailed

Bagotstown businessman and the Presidential Candidate for the Fundamental Support Group at the 2011 General and Regional elections, Anthony Snow was sentenced to two years imprisonment yesterday on a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Snow was convicted by Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrates’ Court.
It is the State’s case that on December 7, 2011 at the 24/7 Restaurant and Bar in Bagotstown which was owned by Snow, he grievously harmed Sham Ramdatt who at the time was a customer at the establishment.
He made his first appearance before Magistrate Leslie Sobers and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Ramdatt, a businessman of Lot 30 First Street, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was also charged with common assault and abusive language in the matter.
It was reported that Ramdatt was consuming alcohol at Snow’s Restaurant and when it was time for him to pay he realized that his money was ‘stolen’. He informed Snow and assured him that he would pay his bill before he left.
An argument started and it is alleged that Ramdatt assaulted Snow.
In turn, Snow reportedly dealt Ramdatt several blows about his body with a metal bar which resulted in him (Ramdatt) suffering a fractured nose.
Snow had also cuffed, kicked and stomped on Ramdatt after he fell to the ground. Ramdatt was picked up and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for treatment.
Medical documents presented to the court by Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Shellon Daniels indicated that Ramdatt suffered contusions to his head, face, chest and abdomen. The doctor had also recorded that Ramdatt’s face and head were swollen.
The matter was reported and both men were arrested and charged. At the first hearing the 2011 Presidential Candidate was placed on $300,000 bail.
During the trial, several witnesses, including Ramdatt’s wife, Sergeant Bowman, Lance Corporal Liverpool and Corporal Kevin Hector testified on the State’s behalf.
Snow was defended by Attorney-at-Law Max McKay. In July, the Prosecution closed its case and the defence made a no case submission.
Returning her verdict yesterday, Magistrate Daly said that she had relied on the strength of the Prosecution’s case and had found Snow guilty as charged.
