Government says it intends to present to the National Assembly a budget that aims to continue its development thrust. This, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh says is despite the current challenges posed by the combined opposition with their most recent tactic to disapprove important financial papers.
“It is our intention of Government to take to the parliament a budget that will serve the continuation of this work in doing so we will listen to all of the view that are available including the views of the other parties in parliament we will endeavor to come to parliament with a budget that is faithful to the objectives of continuing growth and continuing economic and social development” Minister Singh said.
The Finance Minister said it is hoped that the recent alarming behavioral pattern demonstrated by the combined opposition is not a preview of the kind of trend that the parties will be setting particularly with the national budget pending.
“This kind of opportunistic behavior by the opposition does not auger well for the kind of discussion on the National Budget”, “What manifested itself to subordinate national development to subordinate the interest of the people at the altar of political grand standing a willingness to use their vote to projects that are unchallengeable solely for the purposes of saying we have the majority we could do it”
The minister questioned to what lengths the opposition intends to take such action. However, government has vowed that it will not deviation from its developmental thrust by such actions since the welfare of the Guyanese people is of utmost importance.
The opposition’s recent actions were described by government as 'an absurd and incomprehensible position of pretence”. At the last sitting of the National Assembly, the combined opposition rejected financial paper number eight which caters for strategic supplementary requests, which was not catered for in the 2011 national budget.
Financial paper number seven, which deals with the clearances of advances from the contingency fund, was passed with amendments after much debate.
