Forgotten Youth Foundation’s 18-year-old Keevin Allicock followed up his Gold Medal in last year’s Championships in Barbados by winning another Gold medal when he defeated Ajayi Jones of Barbados in Saturday night’s finals of the third annual Caribbean Championships (formerly Caribbean Development Boxing Championships) in Grois Islet, St Lucia.

Solider Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis, who also won Gold in last year’s Championships, beat Jessie Jones of Barbados and Middleweight Desmond Amsterdam knocked out his opponent in the first round to also capture Gold Medals, while Joel Williamson, the other Guyanese Boxer, had to settle for a Silver after losing to 2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist Trinidadian Michael Alexander.
Allicock, a Silver Medallist at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas earlier this year, Lewis and Williamson all fought in Jamaica this year and President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle said the Association was very happy with the results.
“It was what we expected. We would have wanted to send a larger team which would have meant a larger haul of medals, but I think the four Boxers represented Guyana well…they give sterling performances and Guyana remains the talk through the Caribbean,” said Ninvalle.
“These Boxers and others… we will try to make sure that we (GBA) keep exposing them. But the bottom line is just what could be derived if we get adequate recourses. We don’t ask for much…we have never asked for much. If we have the resources needed, the sky is the limit for Guyana,” Ninvalle stressed.
He said without fear of contradiction that for the Commonwealth and Olympics Games the only two sports which could give Guyana Medals are Athletics and Boxing.
“We have clearly stamped our authority again. Speaking with the President of the St Lucia Boxing Association, David Christopher… he said that their Association has to be very careful about how they are inviting Guyanese Boxers. Because what we have done is spoil their show really since Kevin Mortley who Amsterdam defeated in the semi-final is St Lucian,” Ninvalle concluded.
Due to a lack of funds the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) could only send a six-man team including four boxers and although the Guyanese captured three Golds and a Silver Medal, Team Guyana was not able to accumulate enough points to retain their team title.
