Rain or no rain, Organisers of the 2nd Boyce & Jefford Relay & Fun Day are going ahead with the event set for today, at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Following last weekβs unavoidable postponement due to rain, Co-organiser Edison Jefford speaking with Kaieteur Sport via telephone yesterday, said they remain optimistic that todayβs activities will provide the eagerly anticipated excitement, informing that with the addition of events such as cycling and races for the Differently-abled athletes, he expects this yearβs edition will easily eclipse last yearβs, both in terms of support and thrill. He pointed to the increased interest in the football segment and the inclusion of the wheelchair races and cycling as testimony to the growing interest in the annual extravaganza. βWeβve decided to add cycling, wheelchair racing as well as increasing the number of teams for the football competition and these developments are as a result of appeals made by the fans and some sponsors to add some more flavor to the dayβs activities,β Jefford told this newspaper. According to the Co-organiser, dominoes which have become a very popular sport in Guyana also have a great pull among the eventβs supporters and they anticipate a large turnout of teams for this aspect of the Fun Day. However, the 5-a-side format of football has been enjoying great success and this event is where a lot of excitement and rivalry is expected, especially with the community-based teams all having huge support from residents within the respective neighbourhoods. Sparta Boss has evolved into one of the best teams in the shorter version, winning most of the tournaments they participate in. Their high rate of success has stirred up a love, hate relationship among fans, some coming out just to see them lose, while a large section revel in victory. They are one of the teams invited to compete and they will face teams the likes of nemesis Back Circle, Agricola Champion Boys, Bent Street, West Front Road βGold is Moneyβ, Camp Street All Stars, the Guyana Police Force, The Guyana Defence Force, Sophia, Kanaimas and Broad Street Bullies. It should be a fascinating battle and everyone familiar with the teams knows the long history of rivalry that exists between them. Meanwhile, the Organisers have set 09:30 hrs as the deadline for registration for a prompt start at 10:00hrs and are urging teams to be on time. This according to them is due mainly to the number of activities listed to be staged in the one-day event.
