Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, hands over a Certificate of Achievement to Hermant Deokarran, student of the auto mechanic programme offered by the ministry

THE MINISTRY of Home Affairs has collaborated with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in executing the Youth Life Skills/ Vocational Programme, under the Ministry’s Citizens Security Programme.

On Friday, a graduation ceremony was held at the University of Guyana, Tain Campus, Berbice, for the latest batch of 46 youths.

This programme seeks to prevent youngsters from becoming involved in negative activities and to help them develop their minds.

At the graduation, Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee observed that it was the twelfth graduation exercise. Since the implementation of the programme, over 435 have graduated.

While this may not seem a large figure, Minister Rohee acknowledged that there are numerous other educational activities going on.

The batch completed training in computer service data entry, auto mechanics, computer repairs, cosmetology, garment construction, cake decoration, auto body and repairs, and welding and fabrication.

Government is placing much emphasis on non-traditional exports and value added downstream production, as well as information technology, Minister Rohee told the graduates. He mentioned the major projects that the government is involved in, such as the One Laptop Per Family Initiative, to ensure youths become technologically advanced.

“What we would like is for you to have a clear understanding of the linkage between what you have acquired and what you have been taught, what you have set out to do, to understand the link between that and what is meant by a safe neighbourhood,” he said.

“The idea is for when people see what you have acquired, they must look at you as an example of a person who got a second chance in life,” Minister Rohee said. (GINA)
