Census shows 1 in 2 people are poor or low-income
Nearly half of Americans are low-income as rising expenses, unemployment shrink middle class

By Hope Yen, Associated Press |

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans — nearly 1 in 2 — have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.

"Safety net programs such as food stamps and tax credits kept poverty from rising even higher in 2010, but for many low-income families with work-related and medical expenses, they are considered too 'rich' to qualify," said Sheldon Danziger

And for those who do qualify, the budgets are being cut. Goldman Sachs needs that money.

And you dont blame George Bush who landed us in this mess to begin with?

I blame them both. Both were sponsored by the same crowd and delivered the same policies, giving us one of the most hellish decades in US history.

American have 300 million people!

Guyana have 750 thousand people and 90 percent live at or below the poverty line!

At least America provide food stamps and low cost housing (projects) for its citizens. What do Guyana give theirs?

I suspect Henry can't go the United States so its more like sour grapes.

At least in America there are opportunities for those who seek it. What do the young people in Guyana have to look forward to when they finish high school or university???

Under a democratic president, the country cannot find a few paltry millions to help the poor and needy.
The US has been steadily drained of its wealth since the stock market crash of 1989, and Greenspan's decision to respond by launching the mother of all bubbles. However, when the bubble burst in 2007, that was when the serious suffering began to be inflicted on the US population, and Obama has stuck with Bush's policy of making the poor pay for the bank bailouts.

Yes, it is a place where homeless people still have to pay to be able to sleep in the sidewalks or in the middle of the highways, a place where people poo on the streets and publicly because there are no toilets (what the heck is a toilet); a place where people have to take bath on rivers which are actually the only sewage system, a place where is hard to tell the difference between a creek or a sewer. A place where the upper castes are totally blind to the misery of the large majority of the population. A place which I could only possible describe as hell on earth.

The whole of Africa is a slum and extreme poverty. Full of thugs and dictators, the PNC has similar traits. Destroy Destroy.
