6 city hall officials in Guyana's capital put on leave as police probe corruption allegations
GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Six managers in the local government of Guyana's capital city have been temporarily suspended as authorities probe a slew of corruption allegations.
Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green says his administration's treasurer, engineer, chief clerk and three other city hall managers have been put on leave as police investigate accusations of alleged theft of gasoline and mismanagement of public money. It was not immediately clear if the six were put on paid or unpaid leave.
Green on Sunday would only describe the probe as a "very troubling situation."
The investigation comes as Georgetown's government is struggling to pay workers' salaries. Green has repeatedly complained that he has not been given support by the central government to install parking meters or create a lottery to boost the city's dwindling revenues.
