GEORGETOWN, Guyana  – Six people were killed and one other missing after two passenger boats were involved in a collision on the Pomeroon River late yesterday.

A police statement said that one of the boats owned by the Region Two administration and another boat owned and piloted by Harrinarine Bhagwandin, collided while travelling in the vicinity of Siriki, Upper Pomeroon River in the country’s vast interior.

It said that six people travelling in Bhagwandin’s boat lost their lives while 12 year-old Eli Orlando, suffered injuries and has been admitted to the Charity Hospital.  Bhagwandin was among those killed. Three members of a family were also reported killed.

Police said the captain of the Region Two vessel is assisting with the investigations.

Media reports said that heavy rains may have caused the collision and it is unclear whether the pilots of the two boats saw each other.

Region Two Chairman Parmanand Persaud, who was in one of the boats said he was shocked at the incident.

“I cannot believe what just happened in the Pomeroon River,” he said, adding that he and the others on the Region Two boat had been saved by God. (CMC)
