Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) President Clinton Urling has criticised local politicians for their confrontational logic, which he said, can hamper the growth of the economy and prevent local and international investment crucial to the country’s development.
Urling said Guyana is a country on the move with a strong economy which has recorded six years of consecutive growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The chamber’s own internal survey released about two weeks ago indicated that the country is performing very well.
He stressed that government and private sector investment are at unprecedented levels in all sectors of the economy, but it is by no means perfect.
The GCCI president said it is also important to maintain a stable economic environment, giving the private sector a reason to continue investing and expanding operations.
However, Urling noted that the environment is under threat by the posturing of politicians and policy makers, who seem unable to reach consensus.
He suggests that politicians move from a logic of confrontation to one of dialogue, achieving results in the best interest of the country.

Reverse our progress over the years is precisely what the APNU/AFC alliance intends to do. They are hampering progress by frustrating the work of parliament with meaningless motions and using their 1 seat majority when combined to stymie every government initiative which could bring relief to the suffering people.

You did research on the drug trade?

Growth at the begging bowl, borrowing and vending our natural resources when every native industry is on life support is dubious growth. Further, the decay of our society into a corrupt feeding frenzy as state assets are leeched away buy crooks in the administration means the opposition is doing their job. Without them, we would never in the remotest possibility get to know how deep their thieving tentacles penetrated all aspects of the state resources.

Despite your efforts to attribute all sorts of reasons there has been GROWTH and the actions of the APNU/AFC alliance suggests that they are seeking to stymie it.

I am simply stating the reality. Sugar is in the dumps, rice is on life support and Bauxite is being given away for "investment" to exploit it taken as income on the balance sheet of the PPP.

We are a begging bowl economy. That is the reality. I did not make it up. Look to your budget an you will see the income streams. It is not from any productive capacity on a national level.

I do not know what the AFC/APNU alliance is doing except uncovering the layered corruption and patronage system the PPP has implanted in the society. We must transform from a Macos/Suharto corrupt model of a democracy to an accountable one. That is the reality you and the AFC/APNU must face.

S'Born, you have to really do a study of all the loans and grants provided bilaterally and multilaterally and by Institutions like the IDB and World Bank, before you castigate growth that arise from this type of capital injection. These are specific economic activity that may or may not be in the budget discussions. They may also be ratified by the elected representatives (I don't know how this is exercised). But before you denigrate this as begging bowl or loan-led investments, let's hear the facts.

The other thing is the question of "vending our natural resources when every native industry is on life support is dubious growth". There might a more helpful way to advance an argument that the Guyana Government has a wrong approach to foreign investments that maximize the resources for the benefit of the people. You have show me where local capital can exploit Guyana's resources for the benefit of Guyanese. Or show me the mis-steps in its natural resource strategy.

I only encourage you to stay with the reality and leave the rhetoric aside.

Kari
