As everyone knows, yuji22 has been a staunch PPP apologist in GNI Political Forum. And, in keeping with his pugnacious style, he parried blows from us and gave as much as he got.

Imagine my surprise today when yuji started a thread very critical of the PPP for not holding local government elections. He went even further in another post:

I was defending a Dr. Jagan's PPP but realized that the PPP of today is nothing like what Dr. Jagan would have liked to see had he been alive. Dr. Jagan was not perfect but he was a lot better than what is left of the PPP today.

I am deeply disappointed with today's PPP and where they are taking Guyana.

I want to welcome yuji to our company. I want yuji to know that before I became Gilbakka I used to defend the PPP staunchly in this forum from November 2009 to December 2011, using the nickname Bookman. Thereafter, I couldn't defend the corrupt and hard-headed PPP with a straight face and clear conscience. I was not the only one.

Many current GNI members used to defend the PPP too, but ceased after discovering one wrongdoing after another by the party/PPP regime. They include Churchill, asj, Stormborn and others.

All of us cannot be wrong. All of those former PPP activists and supporters cannot be wrong. Let's be blunt: the PPP is losing blood because of its indecent actions. It will lose more blood as more supporters desert and depart.

I love Guyana and want to see the best for Guyana. We can make a difference if we speak out against what is wrong about Guyana and the need for the PPP to modernize the party.

I will now be a political critic rather than a die hard support for any political party. I now see myself as an Independent in terms of Guyana's politics. I remain a staunch conservative in terms of Canadian politics.

Debates are healthy and to those whom i traded blows with in the past, I offer my sincerest apologies. To those who are disappointed with my decision, I must say that I want to be on the right side of history.

I did what is right and there is nothing to be ashamed about my decision. This not about a sudden turn, I took the facts into consideration and let my conscience be my guide.

As Gil said, how can all the former die hard PPP supporters be wrong ? Many dedicated their lives to the PPP.

As for XM, I never tasted liquor in my life and never will. As for Harmonium, I can play it quite well. I can understand your doubts, but I can now sleep well knowing that I am no longer defending questionable politicians.

yuji, I appreciate your honesty of expression. Also, your declaration "I now see myself as an Independent in terms of Guyana's politics."

From living experience, I must caution you that you will face criticisms and attacks for your bold move. You will be called unsavory names. But I know you have the ability to repel potential assaults.

Most important, tell yourself that you will sleep soundly with a clear conscience tonight and onwards. Your mind will be light and free, believe me.

I think all political parties in Guyana had faults. The early PPP (both the pre-split party and the one after the split) had the right ideals politically, but just couldn't be a center-left party economically because of the primary producing character of Guyana and its aging infrastructure. The PNC was more your classic strong-man party with a comrade leader cult. The early post-1992 PPP was perhaps the more centrist party following on the center-right Hoyte PNC.

The current PPP however is different and so when a PPP supporter says that he or she does not like this PPP it is not necessarily reflecting a liking for the opposition. It has taken some PPP supporters a short time to come to this realization and others a longer time. I know that Nehru is another supporter who questions the PPP but fears the alternative. We will see the slow departure from this group which bears no resemblance to either the earlier PPP or the centrist PPP of the last years of Cheddi.

It all makes the point that the opposition has to make itself more attractive to the disaffected PPP supporters, but it faces that biblical hurdle - a fear of the Burnham PNC. Whither apology?! (that's not a mis-spelling, it's "whither" with an "i".
