Four Guyanese for Obama Young Leaders programme

Four Guyanese will participate in US President Barack Obama’s 2016  Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellows Program, a release from the US Embassy yesterday said.

The four are Dason Anthony, Judason Bess, Abbigale Loncke and Shaunda Yarde.

The initiative will bring together 250 young leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean for an exchange programme that will involve internships and skills-building workshops.  President Obama launched YLAI to construct linkages between young leaders across the hemisphere and to broaden opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and civil society leaders.  The programme will commence on October 5 in Dallas, Texas and culminate with a summit in Washington, D.C., in early November.

Anthony is one of the owners of 592Dresses, founded in July of last year.  592Dresses helps boutiques and local designers to sell, market, and advertise their products through its online marketplace.

Bess, the co-owner and manager of The Farmacy, focuses on making agriculture and food production more sustainable.

Loncke has spent most of her adult life helping those in need, the release said.  She created Community Health Care, an agency that delivers home care needs for the elderly, sick, disabled, and children in the comfort of their homes, while training women who are in need of employment to take up roles as care-givers.

Yarde founded Coconut Grove with her grandmother’s recipe in 2013.  She uses fresh local ingredients to make a culturally rooted product, Golden Crunch Coconut Biscuits.  The release said that the biscuits were part of Moray House Trust’s 2015 Christmas Parcel and Guyana’s 2016 Golden Jubilee welcome package.

The release said that over the five-week programme, the fellows will learn and share their experiences in start-ups, small businesses, non-governmental organizations, and similar entities in cities throughout the United States and in conjunction with community groups and American universities.

The 2016 YLAI Professional Fellows selection team received nearly 4,000 applications for this Presidential programme.  The release said that the 250 selected business and social entrepreneurs represent 35 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean and have demonstrated the energy of this generation to build stronger, more prosperous, and more secure communities throughout the hemisphere.

Areas of interest include agriculture, clean energy, consulting, e-commerce, education, entrepreneurship development and support, food and beverage, food security, health care, hospitality, LGBTI rights, marketing and branding, mobile applications, and women and youth empowerment.

Are Indo Guyanese not worthy for Obama's Youth Leaders Programme or is it exclusively for Blacks ?

That seems quite racist.

Guyana is a country of SIX RACES !!!!!!

Granger's wishes are slowly coming through. The clock is ticking was a coded message for Black supremacy and dominance in Guyana.

I spoke with my father-in-law in Guyana and he told me that if you look at TV in Guyana nowadays, it is dominated by blacks. The government is dominated by blacks.

Remember blacks are only 29 Percent of the population. Guyana is become a very racist nation under Granger. This pick for leadership is a reflection of that blatant racism.

No surprises, you are defending a racist PNC. Carry on.

Burnham days are back in full swing. Racism at it's best and black domination has only started.

Possibly a number of applicants but the selectors, perhaps, know who are to be the chosen ones.

I don't think folks should jump to conclusions without knowing the details

Thank you Raymond.

The programme has evolved over the years.

A succinct part for 2016.

Plus don't you all scream how rich every Indian is?  So they don't need the help. How do you know whether any even applied?

In fact even a white American visitor to Guyana saw blacks in Guyana is clerks and other low level workers. Basically people who implemented decisions made by others.

Its good for you to learn what life is like when you exclude others.  I have no sympathy for your wails.

You never knew that the shoe would ever be on the other foot.

No go and wail and cry.  Most Guyanese Chinese are in Canada, and the Chinese in Guyana aren't Guyanese.  Go check the census and you will see that they are almost no Chinese left in Guyana.

Carib...in all fairness, we dont know if any Indians or Amerindians applied for these awards. Maybe none of them did. Maybe none of them coolies knew about it either.

So, I dont share the view like some of the other GNIers here that this might be a racist move against non-Afros.

However, in all of your responses, you keep harping on one theme and one theme only: It was worse under the PPP and they did it then, so now its OK for this government to do this (assuming it was a deliberate attempt at discrimination).

This type of response from you is predictable and it only incites others on this site. I have to say it is also racist.

Because what you are saying is that the status quo is OK for Indians and Amerindians to be discriminated against.

If this has gone on for 23 years, and 28 years before this, when does your "vengeance is mine" and "its Black man time now".

Unless your statements are geared towards baiting and goading others here or trying to instigate others into responding, you are just as guilty as the people who you criticize here.

Not to defend anyone of your critics, but from what I have been reading here so far, this is the part of you that Django and Gilbakka does not fully understand.

This is the worst kind of attitude...one that is camouflaged by racial blinders. You accuse others of jumping to conclusion (not that I am denying this), but you do the very same thing.

And please, spare us with your blustering response about the "Indo KKK" (I am a "dougla"). Just ponder on this slogan..."if it was wrong then, it is wrong now".

After the elections of 1992, Indians felt liberated and Bollywood songs were on the air waves. Even though dat Putagee Veira refused to have anything to do wid Indian culture. A few Blacks phoned in to a live talk show and complained about the music, wondering if Guyana was an Indian country.

Blacks will always be racist, in every stripe.

This is a joke? Blacks are young entrepreneurs in Guyana as per the requirements for the fellowship?  The last time I checked, Indians were the business people. Maybe this fellowship will teach them how to plant cassava and eddoes as we see Blacks in Guyana flocking to lazy man government jobs.

These people are a special kind of stupid. Here they are blaming the PNC and the Guyana Government when neither of the two are involved in the selection process. It is a program run by the U.S. State Department and the selection of candidates is done entirely by the Meridian International Center working in conjunction with the U.S. State Department.

Here is what happened.  The US government came to GNI and saw how all of the PPP Indians used to lambaste blacks in Guyana.  Thinking that blacks in Guyana faced apartheid level racism from Indians they then sought them out.

Continue with your anti black bigotry.  It just deepens the belief that Guyanese Indians are a bunch of racists and that blacks need to be equipped to protect themselves against those who would sabotage their interests.

How are my comments anti black? Do you not concur that Indos are the business people in Guyana and Blacks are the government workers? How can 4 blacks represent young entrepreneurs of Guyana? Clearly racist Granger has a hand in the selection as govt provides the list from which the candidates are chosen.

Stupid man, there is no Guyana government involvement in the selection of the candidates. There is also no list of applicants provided by the Guyana Government for consideration. The individual applicant has to go to the U.S. State Department's website set up for the program and fill out the application. Along with the application, you have to submit a business plan, an essay and a resume. That these four people were chosen by the Center established to review the applications had nothing to do with the Government of Guyana.

Don't be daft man, why all Blacks when close to 50% of Guyana are Indians? Granger gave his input and this is what resulted.
