While not divulging details of the meeting, the GDF in a Facebook post said the Chief of Staff reiterated the "apolitical nature and posture of the Guyana Defence Force", indicating that the current political situation in the country was part of the discussions with the Diplomats.
The Guyana Defence today announced that the recently appointed acting Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier Godfrey Bess, and a high-level military team met today with the Diplomatic representatives of the US, UK, Canada and the EU.
While not divulging details of the meeting, the GDF in a Facebook post said the Chief of Staff reiterated the “apolitical nature and posture of the Guyana Defence Force”, indicating that the current political situation in the country was part of the discussions with the Diplomats.
The GDF said Brigadier Bess also emphasized that the GDF is fulfilling its mandate and will continue to abide by its role as stipulated by Guyana’s Constitution.
According to the release, the Diplomats also pledged their continued military support for the GDF.
Senior officers present during the courtesy call included Inspector General, Colonel Trevor Bowman, Quartermaster General, Colonel Sherwin Anderson, Adjutant General Colonel Raul Jerrick, and Staff Officer One Special Duties Lieutenant Colonel Colin Henry.
The meeting has raised eyebrows among some ex-military officials who said it appeared unusual for foreign diplomats to be meeting with the top brass of the country’s military GDF’s to discuss the current political situation in the country.
