Abduction of airport-bound couple… Police constable under close arrest
A police rank from a highway base was under close arrest yesterday as investigations continued into the abduction of a Timehri-bound couple and a taxi driver two Saturdays ago.
Police sources confirmed that the constable is being held at the Tactical Services Unit Base, Eve Leary. However, Kaieteur News was unable to confirm reports that another rank is also under close arrest in connection with the same incident. It is also unclear whether two civilians that police had detained were still in custody.
Latchmin and Lekraj Gopaul, along with taxi driver Parmamand Teekaram, were tied up and robbed of millions at Yarrowkabra, on the Soesdyke/Linden highway, after being abducted by two armed men who were wearing police uniforms.
Teekaram, the driver, alleged that one of the men had a handgun and was dressed in blue police attire, while the other carried a ‘long gun’ and wore the clothing of a ‘black clothes’ rank. He also said that the men had contemplated killing him and the Gopauls.
Teekaram was carrying the Gopauls to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport when the men signaled for him to stop in the vicinity of Land of Canaan on the East Bank. The taxi driver alleged that the ‘policemen’ said that they had received a report that a car similar to his was involved in a hit-and-run accident near Garden of Eden.
Police have since set up round-the-clock patrols to protect travellers heading to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
