AFC back-peddle on Amaila Hydro bills a result of public backlash, dwindling support
In being asked to explain the AFC's back-peddle a political analyst tied it to the party's dwindling support and public backlash. Several organizations had castigated the two opposition parties when they voted against the two critical pieces of legislation in July. The Private Sector Commission also issued strongly worded statements in which it called on the two opposition parties to stop playing politics with Guyana's development whilst expressing confidence in the project.
Also supporters of the AFC have publicly and privately expressed their disappointment with the party's behaviour since the 2011 elections. Many said that they felt betrayed as it appeared the AFC which promised change became and extension of the PNC's APNU. The analyst said that many of the persons who supported the AFC in 2011 no longer see the party as a viable third force. He said many have since either not renewed their membership or have shown a complete lack of interest in the parties affairs.
