AFC Prime Ministerial Candidate, Raphael Trotman in full flow
LAST evening saw men, women and children decked in green and yellow, placards raised high above their heads, pledging allegiance, and reaffirming their loyalty to the Alliance For Change (AFC) .
High on adrenalin and attempting to add fuel to an already smouldering fire, party prime ministerial candidate Raphael Trotman, shouted above the din: “The wait is over! And all races can feel free to unite as Guyanese, once the Alliance For Change (AFC) is elected to Government, come November 28!”
Trotman’s bold statement came while urging the hundreds of party faithful gathered at the Parade Ground on Middle, Carmichael and Waterloo Streets last evening to join in the call for ‘change’, and to “not be afraid “ of embracing the new future.
In their last-ditch effort to attract an even larger following for the 2011 General and Regional Elections, senior party members urged those present at the rally, through song, dance and verse, to continue to believe in the principles and programmes promised by the AFC, “the party for change.”
Moses Nagamootoo in victory mode
Despite the fact that the evening began on a solemn note, with tributes to one of their fallen comrades, Sheila Holder, who recently passed away, members reminded the gathering, with much enthusiasm, that under the leadership of their two “heroes”, there were brighter days ahead.
Trotman told the eager gathering that the evening’s event was not about focusing on policies and programmes, but rather about recognising that the people who support the AFC movement are “the salt of Guyana.“
“It is you the people who have made this campaign wonderful, and I encourage you not to be complacent, but to press on and get ready for change,” he said, adding that in the last six years, the AFC has matured as a party, and can now stand firm and represent all the people of Guyana, particularly with Moses Nagamootoo and Khemraj Ramjattan as the driving forces behind it.
Meanwhile, Moses Nagamootoo, in his bid to secure a win for his party, regaled the crowd with tales of his days as a member of the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), and told of the courage and defiance it took to withdraw from that party to later join the AFC, the party that aims “to turn the country around.”
Buoyed perhaps by the imaginary taste of sweet success, he said: “We are confident of victory… do not believe the losers who say that they have the elections in the bag. The PPP has lost, and are beating a retreat, as they have seen the writing on the wall.”

He then hastened to assure supporters that there will be no coalition between the AFC and any other party, and instead accused President Bharrat Jagdeo of being in collusion with PNCR leader, Robert Corbin.
He promised that under the AFC leadership, Guyanese can be assured of strengthened international ties with our immediate neighbours, namely Venezuela, Suriname, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago.
With this in mind, he urged those assembled to encourage their friends and families to “be brave” and use their ‘X’ as weapons for change as they go to the polls tomorrow.
“Take your future in your hands,” he said, “and vote for the AFC as we transform Guyana.”
Several other party members, new and old, took to the podium to advocate for victory for the ‘Key’. Among them were Freddie Kissoon, Mark Benschop , Valerie Lowe , Nigel Hughes and Richard Van West- Charles, who all expressed gratitude for the support received during the campaign, which began in October.
After more than three hours of listening to testimonials and experiences on the campaign trail, AFC’s Presidential Candidate, Khemraj Ramjattan, was still to address his supporters.
