AFC is not a party without political baggage

“Show me your company and I’ll tell you who you are” - Persaud

THE major political parties continue to pull public endorsement from opposing sides and civil society as elections day draws closer; one such recent move was made by activist Mark Benschop endorsing the Alliance for Change (AFC). People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) and PPP/C campaign spokesman, Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, contends that moves such as these have little impact on the incumbent party’s campaign.

At a press conference last Thursday at Freedom House, he observed that what it does is increase the political baggage of the AFC.

POLITICAL LIABILITIES

“Benschop like Nagamootoo will not make any impact…the people of Guyana must know that the AFC is just another version of the PNC….show me your company and I’ll tell you who you are and that is everyday what we are seeing,” Persaud said.

According to him, the association is clear looking at the AFC’s membership.

“We see what the AFC is about. We see who and who make up the AFC… The AFC creates and impression that it is a new party…a party that has no political baggage, but in fact is becoming a party of political liabilities,” he said.

Persaud noted that the AFC is becoming a party of discredited individuals, with very unholy alliances and background.

He contends that the party’s manifesto remains a key catalyst in influencing former critics’ decision to endorse the PPP/C, noting that the choice for the people is clear, a point that was proved by the support from the hinterland communities.

“The Opposition was totally shocked at the Lethem response. They couldn’t say that we brought people by bus there. They couldn’t say that we brought people by trucks there…

Persaud added that the opposition’s response to the turnout at Lethem is revealing a point raised by the PPP/C that was disputed – that is the alliance between A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the AFC.

BACKROOM TALKS

“The joint strategising is clear. If you look at their ads, if you look at what they say on the platforms, there is a lot of synchronization…we know what is talking place in the backrooms. We know what is taking place behind the scenes,” Persaud said
He said the result of these ‘backroom talks’ is becoming clearer each day.

“This is not a concoction of Robert Persaud or the PPP/C. It is there…it is there for the cameras to see,” he stressed.

According to him, there is an arrangement that has already been consecrated, a grand plan, for APNU and AFC to work together.

“It is clear now that even if you vote for the APNU or the AFC you are voting for the same thing,” Persaud said.

EXPOSED

President Bharrat Jagdeo, at last week’s public meeting in Whim, stressed that the Guyanese people must know the real people that take to the campaign platforms.

He pointed out that AFC’s Prime Ministerial Candidate, Raphael Trotman was visiting criminals in Buxton, saying “he was in the centre of things” and “he has never denied this because he was part of the PNC apparatus.”

AFC Executive Member, Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, was put on alert for the Medical Practioners’ Act that is expected to target “a lot of quacks who practice medicine and damage peoples’ health”. Jagdeo made it clear that the Ministry of Health “would ensure that they examine this man [Ramayya], and if he practices again, Ramjattan will have to visit him in prison, because we can’t allow quacks to run our country”.

According to President, Sasenarine Singh “has been fired five times from five different places for stealing” and businessman Robert Badal, who recently endorsed the AFC, is known for “trying to steal a company – Guyana Stockfeeds – from the government”.

Exposing another member, Rajendra Bisessar, Jagdeo described him as “total waste”.

“He talks all the time. He prattles all the time. This is why I had to throw him out of the Office of the President… for laziness.”

The AFC’s newest Executive Member, Moses Nagamootoo, was described as having “a long track record of lying”.

“He lied on Cheddi Jagan, who else he wouldn’t lie on?” the President questioned.

The President maintained that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) has kept faith with the Guyanese people – a fact clearly reflected in the country’s massive transformation over the last two decades.
