Region Six AFC member resigns, alleges corruption

Gladwin Abdulla, a well-known member of the Alliance For Change (AFC) in Region Six, recently resigned from the party, while citing corruption by party members in the region as one of the main reasons for his sudden decision.

Abdulla, whose resignation was effective from August 15th, yesterday told Stabroek News that he believes that an investigation should be launched.

According to him, there have been several instances of corruption and the final straw for him was when he witnessed an official seeking a β€œkickback” from contractors within Region Six about two weeks ago.

Abdullah explained that he accompanied the official to the contractor’s house and was shocked when the official requested a 7% kickback on a contract that he [the official] would get for him.

According to Abdullah, when the contractor refused, the official claimed he came on instructions from a senior government official, but the contractor still refused. β€œI was highly embarrassed by this open display of corruption,” he said.

He also alleged that the official had asked him for a kickback in exchange for one of the contracts to clear the road shoulders along the Corentyne Highway.

Abdullah charged that persons who were awarded the contracts were only selected because of their ties to parties. He claimed that some β€œdo not even have the financial resources to do the work” and that he had to act as a guarantor for some to be given credit to purchase slashers and gas, among other items. β€œBut it got worse when only a few days ago I discovered that the workers from Number 19 Village were not even paid a dollar for the work they did on behalf of an AFC Executive member turn contractor,” he further said.

Regional Chairman of Region Six David Armogan recently called for the award of the contracts, said to be worth $120 million in total, to be investigated.

β€œMajority of them corrupt. I deal with them. I know and I don’t want to be part of what is going on here right now,” Abdullah, who had been supporting the AFC for over five years, said. β€œThe corruption by the AFC officials is spiraling out of control and the AFC ministers who regularly visited Region Six do not even bat an eyelid,” he added.

Abdullah also said that he is very hurt since he gave all of his support to the party. He noted that the party campaigned on being transparent and accountable, and that was what won his support. β€œThey meant good but they deviated,” he said. β€œI believed in what they said, what they said about accountability and transparency. Is something opposite they doing; they preach that they want a change and they would do good for all the people but they mislead the people and they mislead me and I was hurt,” he claimed.

Abdullah said that he plans to now campaign for the PPP/C at the upcoming local government elections, since he still greatly wants to represent his constituency. He said he feels that it is the move he needs to make at this time in his political career.

His brother, Erwin Abdulla, who was an AFC member resigned soon after the APNU+AFC coalition won the 2015 general elections. He told Stabroek News yesterday that he did not agree with most of the decisions made by the government after gaining office, especially the salary increases that were awarded to senior ministers.

Looks like Django has been busy all morning. Pending the full report I'd say that this latest AFC resignation is no surprise. Decent folks won't tolerate corruption.

So then you saying the whole PPP ruling cabal "indecent?"

Gilbakka has run back to the PPP now so he thinks that they are saints and that Jagdeo is the best leader that Guyana can ever have.  Because he knows full well that whoever the PPP choses will be a Jagdeo stooge just as Ramotar was.

Thanks, bro.

Abdulla is returning to the PPP. Lots of us who misguidedly followed the AFC in 2015 have already returned to the PPP and have been forgiven. Many more will join us in due course. AFC cork duck in upcoming LGE and, provided no rigging occurs the PPP will make a comeback in 2020.

Gill,

The PPP defectors that are returning are from Region 6,predominantly PPP region,no problem.

Will that put a dent on AFC support ? we will find out.

Not from Region 6 only, according to my sources. Region 2 too.

If all the PPP defectors from predominantly PPP regions returns, still tough for the PPP to win.For the 2020 elections ,there are sizable increase of Mixed and Amerindians voters.Which ever party attract those voters will form the government.

Guyana isn't like long ago when you had "red" people who were a separate entity to themselves.  Trotman claims to be mixed.  How many view him as mixed and what is the possibility that a man like Trotman would allow a PPP victory?  There is no singular "mixed" group anymore.  There are a variety of mixtures and a variety of attitudes towards ethnic identity.

The results will be determined by who will get their hard core base> I expect a very low turnout by the youth.  In a low turn out low energy elections the Amerindians will find better use of their time because as you know getting to polling stations in the interior is not easy for many.

Yes endorsing all of the anti black PPP racism.  If the coalition has a hope its if non Indians in Guyana think that Indians are ganging up to "tek back de country" as Jagdeo threatened to do after the PPP loss.   That might get them out to vote and there are more of them than ever as the mixed identified population is rapidly growing and almost unanimously support the coalition last time.

Word is that as much as non Indians don't like the coalition they don't want to return to Indian domination.  So if you returning folks really want Guyana to rise above ethnic stress you would suggest that this PPP/ROAR identity that Jagdeo has assumed since the 2011 loss he gets rid of.

2015 changed the same old same old as black/mixed voters saw that PPP victories (without rigging) aren't inevitable.  This means that many are less tolerant of Indian domination.  You have your work cut out and its on you to ensure that the PPP's appeal is spread.  Not sure how you will do so given the vary racist image that Jagdeo has carved out over the last decade.

And please stop this nonsense of getting some House Negro token to be the running mate will impress the black/mixed vote.  Who even knows where Elisabeth Harper is?
