[www.inewsguyana.com] â Attorney General Anil Nandlall has resubmitted four Bills that were defeated in the Tenth Parliament for reconsideration by all Parliamentarians.
Among the Bills returned are the disputed Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Amendment Bill which was defeated in the House on November 7 by a majority opposition vote. The opposition had claimed then that the amendments were incomplete.
The Firearms (Amendment) Bill, Evidence Amendment Bill and Summary Jurisdiction Amendment Bill were also returned in the name of Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall all of which were defeated in the House on March 14 by a majority opposition vote.
The Opposition was at the time maintaining its stance not to support any piece of legislation piloted by Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee, who they had passed a motion of no-confidence in 2012.
The four Bills were read for the first time today, Thursday December 12 and will be debated following its second reading at a later date.
On the subject of the AML/CFT Amendment Bill, the Opposition is calling for the Bill to be resubmitted to a Select Committee that will deliberate on the amendments. If Government does not agree to its re â committal to the Committee it is highly unlikely that the support of the Opposition will be garnered in this regard.
Guyana has since been blacklisted by the Caribbean Action Task Force for failure to enact AML/CFT legislation.
