THE Government of Guyana has invested close to $15 billion towards the development of Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) over the last ten years, according to Minister of Housing and Water, Mr. Irfaan Ali. This investment has benefitted some 94,000 people in the Region, an area that has experienced tremendous growth, particularly in the housing sector, he said.
Ali was addressing a gathering of hundreds of new allotees at the Housing Ministry’s eighth One Stop Shop for 2011, at Uitvlugt Community Centre, where applications were processed for house lots at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo last week.
“We are talking about more than 23,000 new lots being available here in Region Three, benefitting more than 94,000 people...we are seeing, here particularly, almost 1,000 lots that would be made available in Zeelugt,” he told the crowd.
Ali explained that $460M has been expended in Zeelugt alone, from which almost 3,500 derived direct benefits, at an average cost of $650,000, per house lot.
“Government understands the critical role that housing plays in transforming the lives of people and improving the family unit, bringing families closer; so we must appreciate and understand this huge progress that has been made in the housing sector in Region Three,” he said.
The Minister assured the impending home owners that they will be residing in a scheme that is comprehensively developed in terms of water, electricity and roads, as some $60M have already been given to Guyana Power & Light (GPL), as an advance payment to facilitate the installation of electric current.
In order to give an accelerated access to the lots and to ensure that residents begin preparations for home construction, sections of phase two of the scheme will be allocated, despite the fact that infrastructure works are only 70 percent completed, he stated.
“By the time you would have completed the administrative works of finalising your house lot, applying for your loan and preparing yourselves to build, the works would have been fully completed,” Ali affirmed.
Alluding to the plans for the further housing development in Region Three, he noted that, within the next five months, another 500 house lots will be available in the existing Zeelugt scheme, along with an intended addition of 200 lots at Leonora and before the end of the year, 800 more in Recht Door Zee.
Despite plans to expand housing development in the Region, the Housing Minister acknowledged that there is still a lot of work left to be done in order to meet the demand for housing in Zeelugt and right across the country.
In order to achieve the set targets, Ali pledged that the Government of Guyana and the Ministry of Housing will work “steadfastly” to ensure that the dream of every single Guyanese, to own their own home, is realised.
“Let me say that we are very happy to be part of the transformation that would take place in your lives. You have, with this government, a government that is committed to the advancement and social development of our country. We are committed to ensure that access to basic facilities like housing, water, education, sanitation, health care – are all met,” he asserted.
