During the PPP regime, they claim that the PPP stole all the money and did not have money to buy pumps. Why can't Harmun unwrap the stolen $5 mil(USD) from his goady and give it back to the people to be used to take care of themselves? There are no funds to be used to ameliorate the problem. All money dun in sport up... 50% raises, plenty banks beer, Heineken, and Hennessy. Typical PNC regime..thief, thief, thief, empty treasury.

Guyana to seek Brazil’s help as many road, radio links to remote Rupununi villages remain cut off

Guyana  will ask Brazil for information about the flow of rivers and also buy emergency supplies from that neighbouring country for flood-hit residents of the Rupununi, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo announced Monday.

“An approach would be made to the military attache of Brazil so that we can have the contact with the authorities there to find out what information they have as regards the flow of water,” he told a meeting of top officials of central government and the Region Nine administration during a visit there.

Authorities said part of the reason for the flood is the fact that the Rio Branco and Rio Negro in Brazil have been “backing up” into other rivers in Guyana

Nagamootoo said the Guyana government has decided to ask Brazil for logistical support and emergency supplies “that you may be able to have logistics better sourced from Brazil at this point in time than to have any logistics or supplies trucked from the city.”  Region Nine Chairman, Bryan Allicock is on record as saying that flood waters have destroyed cassava farms and cut off some southern Rupununi areas from Lethem, the major hub for  fuel and food supplies.

After concerns were raised about the likelihood of school children playing in the flood waters and contracting gastroenteritis, the Prime Minister announced that President David Granger has granted permission to “send the children on recess for the balance of the school term” “once you are satisfied that all the end of term requirements are completed and that children are not disadvantaged by this decision.” An advisory is to be dispatched to all schools for teachers to brief students about water-borne diseases and snake bites.

The Prime Minister also used the opportunity to sound an appeal for bipartisan political support in grappling with the flood that began several days ago due to heavy rainfall and overflowing Takatu, Rupununi and Ireng Rivers. “”In this process we need to have full cooperation among all parties. This is a matter in the interest of our citizens. This is not a political mater. This is not a party matter.

This is a time of possible disaster and we all have to come together and put aside whatever may be the side whatever maybe the side issues that distract use from time to time and be responsive as patriots to take care of all of our citizens who may face problems at this time,” he said.

The opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) controls the Region Nine Democratic Council having won 5,764 votes compared to 3,553 votes at the May, 2015 general and regional elections.

Region Nine Chairman, Bryan Allicock reported that the main road from Georgetown to Lethem is almost impassable and buses are now taking as much as 27 hours to complete a one-way trip. “We are looking at the main road to Georgetown where some bridges have goneâ€ĶThe big heavy trucks are still coming through so when those heavy trucks pass in the bad areas the buses are getting a difficult time. They have to rely on another lorry to pull them through so we need to look at that too because that is where we depend on our resupply from,” he said.

Allicock said a road to sections of southern Rupununi has been washed away and water from one of the rivers has been flooding the savanna. He said the area to Karasabai has been cut off for the past three weeks. Regional Council members are due to visit that village with assistance from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) later this week.

He said a number of the villages is under eight feet of water.

Allicock said the Lethem Police Station would soon be flooded and would have to relocate its operations to another building that has been already identified.

In terms of food supplies, the Regional Chairman said they would have to purchased on credit “until we can get other  relief coming in.” He said the Toshaos (village chiefs) have been reporting that farms in many villages have been destroyed by the flood waters. “For the north; all the farmers called in – Fairview, Annai complete with the villages -Apoteri, Rewa, Crashwater, Aranaputa- all the farms are under water, some up to waist height. Some people are trying to salvage their cassava crops and they are trying their best to see how much they can salvage but it’s a bulk work in parching farine but after three days cassava is beyond salvage,” he said. Agriculture teams are to be deployed to collect data.

In that regard, the Prime Minister said teams of agriculture officials would be going out assess and collect data about damage and destruction to farms in case there is need for assistance with re-cultivation. “You need to have accurate data truthfully compiled about the extent of losses,” Nagamootoo said.

The Regional Chairman  said no one knows what is going on in southern Rupununi areas like Gunns Strip and Parabara because the High Frequency (HF) radios are not working.

An appeal has been also issued for more black tanks and chlorine tablets as usual water sources are under flood water and are unsafe for human consumption. “The water has covered most of the private wells that people use,” he said. A call was made for oral rehydration salts and antibiotics to deal with likely outbreaks of gastro and leptospirosis.

Deputy Head of the Civil Defence Commission, Major Kester Craig said there was no need to buy more pumps and tanks because there are 35 pumps and several black tanks that had been purchased for previous droughts and floods. The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), the Regional Chairman said, would be asked to transport water from identified sources and transport the tanks to the shelters and other affected residents.

While there are usual accumulation of debris, it would be of interest to also know the cause for the "backing up" of water in certain areas ...

.. accumulation of "debris build up" over time

.. etc., etc., etc..

Why is Granger government refused to make flooding a national priority and invite foreign professionals to look into this problem? Soon the entire country will be under water. In the past, Dr. Jagdeo uses to get blame for a few puddles of water, but Granger seems to get a free pass for being a blunt instrument and an obstacle to progress.

If you people read what is posted you will notice the government is looking into ways to handle the situation. Also in the article it states two rivers in Brazil has backed up into Guyana's rivers and both the Guyanese and Brazilian governments have a lot of work to do. If you all who have lots of mouth would like to help, perhaps you should begin by sending down items for the poor people or better yet, head on down with a large bucket and do your part.

20 families evacuated as flood waters rise in Region Nine

– supplies rushed to affected persons

Authorities are continuing to monitor the flood situation in Region Nine with despite no rain in Central Lethem, waters are continuing to rise.
The Takutu River, which divides Guyana and Brazil has overtopped the banks with flooding in sections of Lethem town.
A number of emergency shelters were opened with 20 families from the Lethem and surrounding areas evacuated to emergency shelters.
Travelling to the scene yesterday were Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan, and several officials of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).
Several farms including the large scale Sante Fe rice operations have been swamped.
The team, which included Regional Chairman Brian Allicock and CDC Deputy Director General, Maj Kester Craig, and other officials, conducted ground assessments. They were on Radio Lethem updating residents of the measures in place.
Government said Sunday that following an emergency meeting, it was disclosed that emergency shelters are activated at Arapaima Primary School, the Amerindian Hostel and Culvert City Nursery School.
Drivers and vehicles were on standby to evacuate affected persons to the shelters. A number of telephone numbers were announced for affected persons to call for help. The army has also been called in to assist.
The Regional Chairman had reported Sunday that almost all the Toshoas and village captains in the Region Nine area reported that their farmlands are under water.
Parishara, Nappi and Hiowa are cut off from Lethem because the road is almost completely under water.
While rains had eased in Lethem, there were reports yesterday of heavy showers in the Deep South, Rupununi area.
It was reported Sunday that several communities were cut off by flood waters. At least two communities – Aishalton and Karasabai – are said to be inaccessible.
At Lethem and the bordering community of Tabatinga, several homes were under water.
At least three houses were confirmed to have been flooded and the residents evacuated.
At least one family from Lethem had to be evacuated with the help of police, Member of Parliament (MP) for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Alister Charlie, disclosed Sunday.

Over 1000 cattle die in Black Bush Polder flood

13

More than a thousand heads of cattle have died within the last few days as a result of flood waters at Cookrite Savannah in the Black Bush Polder, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
When this publication visited the Savannah on Tuesday, carcases were seen in varying stages of decomposition. Farmers have put the daily death toll at more than 20. The animals have little or no food to eat and the area stinks of rotting flesh.

Animals lie dead in the floodwaters

More than 1000 acres of land are under water, up to chest high in some sections. About 40 farmers occupy Cookrite Savannah, which is situated between the four polders – Johanna, Mibicuri, Yakasary and Lesbeholden. There are about 7000 heads of cattle along with sheep, goat and horses. The farmers reported that so far, more that 1000 heads of cattle have died and close to 20 horses.
Peter Crawford has 600 heads of cattle in the Savannah and already about 150 have died. Another farmer, Nico Greene, who owns 200 heads, said 50 of his animals are missing. He is fearful that they are dead. His brother, Compton Greene, who owns 400 heads of cattle, told Guyana Times on Tuesday that he lost 10 horses and 60 cows as a result of the floodwaters.
The farmer watched helplessly as the animals developed fevers and then became too weak to stand. One farmer, Seenarine Deonarine, has lost about 100 of his 700 cows.
Sultan Munroe reported that he has lost close to 200 of his 500 cows.
Speaking also with this publication, female farmer Raberta LaRose reported that he lost 300 heads of cattle and about 100 sheep. She said efforts were made to get her animals to dry land risking the chance that they will be impounded. Cattle farmers are also doing the same. However many of them say they can only bring out a small portion.
Lucy Monroe, another female farmer, has already lost about 15 of her 100 heads of cattle. She is of the view that an engineer needs to visit the savannah to find a solution to save the remaining animals.
According to the farmers, only one of the three sluice doors is being operated at Adventure, while the pumps at Eversham and Number 43 Village are not being put into operation.
Region Six Chairman David Armogan had previously told this publication that the regional budget for fuel was cut by close to 50 per cent and as a result, the administration will be unable to carry out much of the work it did in the past.
Regional Vice Chairman Dennis DeRoop on Tuesday said he was aware of the situation and had been seeking the assistance of the cattle farmers to provide transportation to get the regional engineer to visit the area.
Cookrite Savannah is only accessible by boat.
Meanwhile, with no answers to the problem after two weeks of flooding, the affected farmers went to the regional office of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Tuesday seeking assistance. The staff at that office, Gobin Harbhajan, told Guyana Times that he wrote the Prime Minister as well as Agriculture Minister Noel Holder on the issue. (Andrew Carmichael)
