GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Wednesday, February 22, 2012 – A Uitvlugt man who mistook an ambulance for a bus on a rainy night was knocked down dead by the ambulance driver who reportedly mistook him for a cow.

Dead is 26-year-old man, Ganesh Dheines aka ‘Dankie’ of Lot 22 Uitvlugt, Sideline Dam, who reportedly mistook the ambulance for a bus since the “place was dark and the ambulance didn’t had on its siren”.

Dheines was killed on the spot at Meet-en-Meer Zorg, West Coast Demerara, in the company of a friend, by an ambulance transporting a Bartica accident victim to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

The accident occurred around 10 pm on Monday and reports are that Dheines’ friend said that it was raining heavily so they sought shelter in a shop. As the rain eased, both of them exited the shop to stop a bus to transport them home.

Not recognising that it was an ambulance, Dheines held out his hand to stop the proceeding vehicle which eventually struck him down.

According to an eyewitness, the driver reportedly exclaimed after he exited the vehicle: “Oh shoots, I thought it was a cow.”

The driver then rushed the 26-year-old man victim along with the Bartica victim to the hospital.

Dheines leaves to mourn, his mother and six siblings. The driver was taken into police custody at the Leonora Police Station

The driver did the right , honorable thing to rush this young man to the hospital . That in itself was a life saving measure ! The problem is what occured at the hospital ?

Did the hospital housestaff know about the basics ABC ..Airway, Breathing , Circulation ..1st step . Did they assess for an epidural hematoma ? Were they equipped with a CT scan ? Did they know the basics about hemodynamic stability ?

Is there a hospital review of such mortality cases ? How are these housestaff trained ? I have heard and read of so much mortality from cases that I know should have not resulted in mortality if standard of care is followed !

Is there any poster who livesin Guyana right now and can comment on the clinical standard in Guyana ?
I have found some recent news releases which seem to portray a seemingly high level of mortality even for simple puerperal admissions .

G4eva, I don't live there but visit very often. From my experiences, the standards are significantly below NA standards. For minor ailments, the Guyana health care system is adequate.
Anything complicated and even minor surgeries, for those who can afford it, they go to Trinidad other Islands, USA or Canada. Sanitation is poor, there is a shortage of appropriately trained specialists. In-patient hospital care is below standard. Sometimes more than one patient shares a bed.

Things are getting better though.
