American Airlines begins daily New York/Georgetown flights

To the sound of Terry Gajraj’s “Guyanese Baboo” chutney hit, American Airlines on Wednesday launched its service between New York’s JFK Airport and Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan Airport.

The airline will operate direct flights between the two destinations daily and if the sold-out inaugural flight is anything to go by, American Airlines may be steadying up for the long haul in the new route.

At a send-off ceremony at Terminal 8 of the JFK Airport, Guyana’s Consul General in New York Barbara Atherly welcomed the additional flight to the Guyana market from New York.

She said with Guyana currently at the centre of the world’s attention with oil production looming, it is definitely a good time for Guyanese abroad and others to visit and rediscover Guyana.

“This is great because for the Guyanese in the Diaspora, one of the things that they have always been calling for is the increase in the number of flights to Georgetown Guyana and we feel that with more airlines plying the route, it will longterm bring down the cost of travel and so we see this as a major step in the right direction”, Atherly said.

She added that it will also serve as a new connection for investors who are looking at Guyana as their new investment hub.

American Airlines representative, Justin Franco said American Airlines is feeling great about the Guyana market and its potential. He said the launch of the New York to Georgetown service is a move that excites the airline, especially with the success of the Miami to Georgetown route.

American Airlines passengers who were scheduled to depart at 01:35 hrs Thursday on the airlines first direct flight from Guyana to New York have been delayed by 12 hours.

Passengers are forced to endure the delay because weather and other issues caused an almost four-hour delay with the incoming flight from New York’s JFK airport.

What was supposed to be the first direct flight took off two hours late from New York; passengers were told the reason was to clear ice which resulted from a shower just before take-off.  And then a stop had to be made in Puerto Rico to refuel. That, with other technical issues, took over an hour.

“As you know, we are very excited to continue to grow in Guyana. This growth shows the importance of this market.

“However, that success led to a full flight on flight 2896 – which due to weight restrictions – had to make a stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU),” said Justin Franco, a spokesman for American Airlines.

“The stop was required to put additional fuel to get to Georgetown,” he said.

Once the flight arrived in Guyana, passengers at the Cheddi Jagan International airport were told that the crew required rest and so their flight would now depart at around 13:30 hrs today, Thursday.

American’s daily flights were scheduled to leave JFK at 6 p.m. and arrive at GEO at 12:40 a.m. the following day.

The return flight is scheduled to leave GEO at 1:35 a.m. and arrive at JFK at 6:29 a.m.

Guyana has been cursed ever since the Jonestown saga. Nothing to do with Granger

Granger was there usurping power during the 1973 elections. Way before the Jonestown saga.

American is the 'On Time Airline" but when one attach Guyana to it, it gets delayed for 12 hours on its first flight. Any more evidence needed that Guyana is cursed?

Yes there is more evidence.  Passengers traveling to other countries can check in online.  If you are going to Guyana you cannot check in online you have to go meet an American Airlines agent at the counter. And that goes also for Global Entry passengers who have VIP privileges.

We both have Global Entry!  It's not for checking in/leaving the US, it's for entering the US where you can swipe at the machine and come in without passing through an immigration officer!  Driving from Canada, you just drive through the Nexus lane and head on home!

Furthermore, it's not a reflection of VIP privileges!  It was designed for frequent travelers who wanted to expedite their entry.  You are finger-printed and photographed ahead of time and this is stored by DHS.  This is then machine-validated upon re-entry!

Anyone who can travel can apply and get it, even cane cutters like Nehru!  However, if you are not a frequent traveler, why bother!
