Prescott mourns Kayla Mueller death

PRESCOTT – As her hometown mourned, family members remembered Kayla Mueller on Tuesday as a free spirit who wanted to be the voice of those who were suffering.

“The world wants to be more like Kayla,” Lori Lyon, Mueller’s aunt, said at a news conference held on behalf of the family. “If that is her legacy and the footprint that she leaves on the world, then that is a wonderful thing.”

Mueller’s parents, Carl and Marsha, and the White House confirmed Tuesday that the 26-year-old aid worker had died while being held captive by the Islamic State group. She was captured in 2013 in the city of Aleppo, Syria, while helping provide medical care to refugees.

Her captors claim that Mueller was killed in an airstrike by Jordan.

Lyon, joined by Terri Crippes, another of Mueller’s aunts, said the Northern Arizona University graduate found her passion as a humanitarian at a young age.

“Kayla’s calling was to help those who were suffering, whether in her hometown of Prescott or on the other side of the world,” Lyon said, reading a statement on behalf of Mueller’s family. “She has done more in her incredible 26 years than many people can ever imagine doing in their lifetime.”

The Rev. Kathleen Day, who heads the United Christian Ministry at NAU, recalled Mueller being part of a campus group that promoted world peace and made a trip to Guatemala. That passion continued as Mueller shared gripping accounts about the suffering in Syria and urged the world to help, Day said.

“It’s not that she was so angelic. It’s that she just saw things and did whatever she could, with whatever she could,” Day said. “It was just her heart, her mind, her guitar, her pen, her computer.”

After graduating from NAU in 2009, Mueller worked with a variety of humanitarian organizations in countries such as northern India, Israel, Palestine and France, her family said.

Mueller’s parents kept her captivity a secret as they worked with U.S. officials to try to win her release, but they confirmed it after her captors claimed last week that she was dead.

The family released a letter Tuesday that Mueller wrote in 2014 and that her captors shared.

“None of us could have known it would be this long but know I am also fighting from my side in the ways I am able + I have a lot of fight left inside of me,” she wrote in the letter. “I am not breaking down + I will not give in no matter how long it takes,” the letter said.

Prescott residents Ross and Pamela Zappia attended the news conference and said they were shocked at the news. The couple said they occasionally saw her working at a store before she went abroad.

“When she told me she was going into missionary work, my heart sunk,” Pamela Zappia said. “My heart really goes out to the parents.”

Carol Thompson, who teaches political economy, international trade and finance NAU, said in a telephone interview from Zimbabwe that she had Mueller as a student and worked with her at the Flagstaff Peace Center, opposing war but welcoming student veterans.

“Kayla was very intellectual, very smart, and engaged herself in analyzing complexity even contradictions. She very much enjoyed discussing problems in that way,” said Thompson, who is on sabbatical.

“At the same time she was highly compassionate, and that combination was beautiful,” she added.

Thompson said Mueller died doing the work and engaging in the kid of relationships she wanted.

“What she would want is for all of us to engage also fighting for justice and against this highly inequitable world we have,” she said. “She would be asking that we choose engagement and try to change it. That was her life.”

Her idealism took her there. I am sure she saved lots of lives.  I do not call her stupid.  Note she was kidnapped from a relatively safe area. The bastards who kidnapped her are the stupid ones and the cowards

It's easy to admire people with noble humanistic ideals. As we should (generally). Such admiration must be tempered by good sense. These people put themselves in harm's way in hot war zones and when they get caught they place their home governments (especially in democracies) in the awkward position of negotiating with thugs, sending military forces on mission impossible scenarios, or doing nothing and getting bashed for callousness. And then of course, the mental and emotional anguish they put their families at home through either through the uncertainty of their captivity or through watching their beheading on the internet.

P.S....I freely admit my personal bias. I think people who are not in an armed force or accompanied by an armed force for a specific governmental purpose should not venture into areas of armed conflict especially where one side thinks the Geneva Convention is an insult to Allah's Divine Will.

I do not think it is wrong for him to have that position. One does not meander alone into a hot zone. It puts many lives at stake including soldiers lives who would because of public sentiment have to try all they can to rescue them. I do not know what or how she got into her fix but I agree many lives were lost and millions spent to get trying to get her. I however,  mourn with her parents.

Sorry I took so long to reply, I was busy killing some puppies and biting off the heads of newborn kittens.

I absolutely still maintain that this girl was an idiot for the reasons so stated. Or you're free to believe that people dying in horrible ways make me really happy.

Doing something stupid and then getting yourself killed does not absolve you from the objective viewpoint that it was stupid.

I hope other people think twice before wanderlusting into war zones. In case you don't know, war zones are bad places that tend to increase one's chances of death.

Actually, I will have to disagree with seignet for reasons of strategery. I think it's in American interests to let the Islamic State run amok for a while longer. Gives the Muslims something to occupy their naturally violent tendencies with. I don't see how the Islamic State is our problem until they start interrupting oil supplies.

So what tendencies are driving the violence in the Ukraine? The only strategy I sense from you is your hope that someone notice your vitriol and reward you accordingly. People seeking political office make statements for the sake of making them only.

Geopolitics. Russian imperialism etc. etc. All very normal things the international system can cope with. All perfectly respectable reasons to go to war with your neighbor over. Because we can solve those issues someday at a multilateral peace conference at The Hague or Paris. I don't know how one holds a peace conference to satisfy Allah and the Quran.

Which is why I applaud Obama's do-nothing approach he coined "strategic patience." Sometimes, one should do nothing.

Let me say something. I have no political ambitions anymore. I'm happy as a private citizen.

Also, I don't know how one gets "rewarded" for making brutally frank and unpopular opinions on an online forum. Maybe if I was seeking office in Alabama that might make sense. But that's not the case.

One of the most burdensome things about running for even minor office is that you have to either conceal or flat out lie about unpopular beliefs you hold.

I sincerely hold unpopular beliefs. It's not that complicated buddy.

I'm not worried about ISIS. ISIS will kill a lot of people (mostly Muslims) until they get wiped out.

The problem is the so-called "moderate" Muslims who are bombing Western newspapers for cartoons in their "home" countries and calling for Sharia in London and who want a prayer room in every public space.

That to me is the real danger. The snake that is "peaceful" Islam slithering into our bosom and layering her venomous eggs in fragile Western democracies.

They will remain. But they will learn to live like civilized folks. They will obey Western laws, Western mores, Western customs. Quaint notions such as honor killings and cartoon violence will not be tolerated. And no masjids will be built on sites of Islamic Terrorism to commemorate Allah's hatred for infidels.

Then you have a predicament. As long as you live in the free world, you will not be able to avoid some Western Muslims (born and bred in the West) feeling like killing cartoonists amongst others (after all Richard Ried was born and bred in the UK). No less than you would be able to avoid someone putting a bullet in your head over a parking space. Or someone shooting up a theater or school. Even road rage would test your patience and tolerance. The question is if for your own sanity, you can handle it.

Can't you Muslims just learn to kill people over parking spots or shoot up a theater full of people like normal well adjusted psychos?

Our system can handle this kinda behavior. Terrorism however is another story.

For my own good, I don't own a gun. I don't think the stresses of modern society is conducive to gun ownership. For one, I have too many parking space arguments regularly

No geopolitical advantage is or can be gained given the positions taken. It is clear these people cannot hold territory ( inclusive of military might) given their murderous rampages, incompatibility with life, that they build nothing, grown nothing and have no friends or allies except from the disparate ranks of the idiots in our societies. One cannot live on religion alone. They are all dead men walking. Note the fighters leaving Europe are already prevented from coming back with their passports being suspended and rights taken away. Belgium just convicted 40.
