Amidst all the murder and mayhem the Guyana Police Force is reporting a 19% decrease in the crime rate.

Facing a huge public outcry over the out-of-control crime situation the Force today put out statistics which say there was a 9% reduction in reports of murder; a 9% decrease in gun-related robberies; an 8% decrease in armed robberies where other instruments were used by the perpetrators; a 38% decrease in robberies with violence; a 38% decrease in robberies with aggravation; an 18% decrease in rape; and a 22% decrease in break and enter and larceny.

These figures it said, were recorded as of at the end of April this year and were compared to those recorded during the same period last year.

These figures however will do very little to quell public fears of an out of control crime situation. Over the past few weeks not a single day has passed without a report of a major robbery or murder.

The police force is now towing the government line to tell lies and distort the facts.

Why don't you haul your backside and own up that the PPP was suppressing crime figures for decades? Criminals were let out after paying a bribe, big fishes were allowed to raid the country, and many of these criminals were in fact hired killers on the PPP books. When the new government took up office the news papers felt far saver in reporting crimes. Many of these criminals now caught turn out to be established PPP era criminals wanted in connection with some big crime cases that were hidden away by the PPP. We just waiting for the killers of Sawh to be unmasked. Jagdeo will pay for it one day.

These figures MAY BE for reported crimes. What about the crimes committed that were UNREPORTED because citizens have been fed up with the Police and the Government. In my experience more crimes go unreported generally, regardless of which government is in place.

Crime is reported by the news media. It's up to the printed press to balance the number of pages with news and adverts, versus their costs in producing the paper. Similarly, it is up toe the radio and TV stations to balance the length of time they spend covering crime reports, versus their output of other programs. If you want a 24 hour long reporting of every crime committed in Guyana, there is nothing stopping you guys from applying for a radio or TV licence, and employing reporters to cover the stories.
