TUSCHEN TEEN HANGS SELF…suicide note allegedly found expressing love for 17-year-old boyfriendJanuary 13, 2016 2:44 pm Category: latest news, Local News A+ /A-

Reports reaching Inews today indicated that a 13 year old secondary school student of Tuschen East Bank Essequibo is Guyana’s latest suicide victim. Inews understands that the teen was found hanging in her bedroom on Tuesday around 12pm.

The Vergenoegen Secondary School student was discovered by her guardian, Rojinie Sobers Tuesday Midday, minutes after the child went upstairs to take a nap.

suicide 1Sobers said the discovery was made when she went upstairs to check on the teen, after numerous calls for her went unanswered.

While the motive for the teen’s action is not yet known, the child’s grandmother Stephanie Fredricks said that the family found a note allegedly written by the teen expressing her love for a 17 year old boy.

Guyana’s suicide rate continues to escalate out of control and many are of the view that Government in spite of its promises to tackle the scourge head-on has so far done very little in this regard.

The sudden upsurge in suicide on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) within the past 30 days, coupled with the recent tragic incident in Berbice where a 14-year-old girl and her 20-year-old male paramour hung themselves, has become cause for concern.

Additionally, on Sunday alone, four other persons attempted to take their own lives in Region Two, prompting many to intensify the call for greater action at the national level to comprehensively and holistically address this social bane, particularly for the Government to act swiftly.

It's time for the Minister of Social Protection to reach out to the United Nations or any international body for help.  This is an epidemic.  The government (PNC or PPP) does not have the tools to solve this problem.

They have to act fast,"this is getting out of hand"

The Government need to get the heads  of school, religious organizations, community leaders involved in discussion on how they can help. They need to get kids involve in community affairs. Community centers are free. Parents have to be more involved in their kids welfare and have one on one discussion and be proactive in their choices. The opposition and government needs to put politics aside and come up with solutions for the epidemic.

This is so sad.

It's a lucky thing I checked here. I was going to start a thread "Tuschen teen hangs herself".

This epidemic is developing into a pandemic. It's bewildering and stunning. Honestly, I have run out of ideas to solve the problem. It's like pouring water on duck's back.

Gill..Ian mentioned community level,that's a starting point.

With an idiotic response as above, there's one reason nothing is solved.

These kids have to get it through their heads, their lives matter...all lives matter. Ads showing this, perhaps with a hotline number for anyone just needing to talk to someone, anyone.

This is sad and disturbing.  The government needs to act now.  I encourage those on GNI who can help to do it now

The government is too busy with celebratory events. This is not a priority.

Many people die by suicide because depression is triggered by several negative life experiences, and the person does not receive treatment – or does not receive effective treatment – for the depression. (Some people need to go through several treatments until they find one that works for them.)

Some of the negative life experiences that may cause depression, and some other causes for depression, include:

  •  The death of a loved one.
  •  A divorce, separation, or breakup of a relationship.
  •  Losing custody of children, or feeling that a child custody decision is not fair.
  •  A serious loss, such as a loss of a job, house, or money.
  •  A serious illness.
  •  A terminal illness.
  •  A serious accident.
  •  Chronic physical pain.
  • Intense emotional pain.
  •  Loss of hope.
  • Being victimized (domestic violence, rape, assault, etc).
  •  A loved one being victimized (child murder, child molestation, kidnapping, murder, rape, assault, etc.).
  •  Physical abuse.
  •  Verbal abuse.
  •  Sexual abuse.
  •  Unresolved abuse (of any kind) from the past.
  •  Feeling "trapped" in a situation perceived as negative.
  •  Feeling that things will never "get better."
  •  Feeling helpless.
  •  Serious legal problems, such as criminal prosecution or incarceration.
  •  Feeling "taken advantage of."
  •  Inability to deal with a perceived "humiliating" situation.
  •  Inability to deal with a perceived "failure."
  •  Alcohol abuse.
  •  Drug abuse.
  •  A feeling of not being accepted by family, friends, or society.
  •  A horrible disappointment.
  •  Feeling like one has not lived up to his or her high expectations or those of another.
  •  Bullying. (Adults, as well as children, can be bullied.)
  •  Low self-esteem.
  •  Again, the above causes may trigger depression, and untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.

Know what the symptoms of depression are and if you or someone you know is depressed, get them help immediately.

And remember that any untreated mental illness, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others, may cause suicide.
