PEOPLE’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar, speaking at yet another massive rally at Lusignan yesterday, said he will work hard to unite the labour movement in Guyana and embraced former union leader Gillian Burton for coming to the party.
Ramotar, himself a former trade unionist with the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), said, while directing his comments to Burton, that he would seek to continue what she had herself been trying to achieve within the labour movement – to unite the fragmented body.
“My sister Gillian Burton – a comrade from the labour movement – can be assured, and I am assuring her today, that I will do as much as I can to work towards uniting labour in our country once again. Of course, a lot of that will depend on the attitude of some in the trade union movement. I don’t care who they vote for. I don’t care which party they support. That is their democratic right. But as long as they do not use partisan political interests and agendas, and as long as their politics are politics of the working people, they will find a friend in Donald Ramotar,” he said.
He said that his government will ensure that it works together with everyone in society. “We will listen...we are not afraid of different views. We are ready to listen to different views, as long as those views come from one interest, and that interest is to develop our country. We will listen. We will modify. We will work with all in Guyana to build our country and make it a better place. But will struggle and we will fight relentlessly against anyone who is trying to divide our country by ethnicity, religion or otherwise,” Ramotar said.
“We are going to try to get them to work with us...we are going to consult. We are going to talk with them. We want them on board. If they have constructive proposals we will listen to them. But we will not allow them to stymie the development of this country. We will not tolerate any filibustering. And if they want to filibuster, then we will go without them and develop our country,” Ramotar said.
“We will uphold all the human rights and freedoms in the Charter of the United Nations. Not only will we uphold them, but we will try to strengthen and improve them as far as possible,” said Ramotar.
“Freedom is something that we cannot put a price to, and that is one of the greatest achievements of this PPP/C government,” he said.
Ramotar said that it is vital and important that his government review democracy. “And we must see elections as a contest of ideas and it must be a celebration of our democracy,” he said.
He said that women in Guyana have suffered a lot in terms of having their professional lives cut short when they have to tend to their children. “We are going to provide more places to help them to look after their children,” he said, adding that through ICT, these women will also have a chance to make money while working from their home.
Speaking to the participants of the rally, President Bharrat Jagdeo said that the large numbers of supporters of the PPP/C rallies send shivers down the spine of the Opposition. He said another PPP/C victory on polling day November 28 is inevitable.
He again lashed out at the media for seeing only the negative aspects of government and said that they must also hover over the goings on at the Opposition camps. “We have energy here. We have life here. We have people who are full of life and will take our country forward,” the President said.
“Comrades, we are going to pursue an energetic campaign. Our campaign will win love. We are going to preach unity. We are going to talk about progress. But have no doubt that when we are attacked we will stand up because we have a proud party and a proud history to defend,” the President said. He said that the PPP has been at the centre of every single struggle to improve people’s lives since the colonial era.
“Comrades, if you want to place your future and your children’s future in safe hands, you have to ensure that Donald Ramotar becomes our next President,” he said.
Other speakers included Prime Minister Sam Hinds, Gillian Burton, Navin Chandarpal, Odinga Lumumba and Bishop Juan Edghill. There were stirring performances by the Shakti Strings, Vanilla, Jumo, Fiona and Mahendra Ramkelawan of ‘Dem a Watch me’ fame. The President indulged in some serious wining with Fiona to the delight of the crowd, while Ramotar and Sam Hinds also enjoyed the songstress on stage.
