Opposition leader Dr Bharrat Jagdeo

“Imagine the Leaders of the AFC said they have to prove to APNU and Guyana that they are not dead…I suspect that in the APNU circle, they have formed the same impression that we [PPP] have formed- that AFC is dead on the ground as you have seen.”

Those were the words of Opposition Leader, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday afternoon during a press conference at his Church Street, Georgetown office.

He was at the time remarking on the recent announcement by the Alliance for Change (AFC)  that they’ve chosen to go solo at the Local Government Elections (LGE) to prove to themselves and the electorate that they are not “dead.”

Jagdeo went on to chide the AFC, highlighting that they have once again started their campaign on a bunch of false news and promises.

“…in trying to create this impression that they’re different, they’re saying to people, that the APNU group in Government is the corrupt group. They are not. They’ve started spreading that on the ground- that the AFC people have been struggling internally within the Government…to fight against corruption but the APNU people are dominating them. They’ve started in Berbice again saying ‘oh they were opposed to the closure of the sugar industry’- which is not substantiated by facts,” he posited.

“We have them defending the closure vociferously, even more than the APNU people and it was [Moses] Nagamootoo who took that message of closure, long before the decision had been made to close the Rosehall estate,” said Jagdeo.

The Opposition Leader also deemed the fact that the AFC is not claiming responsibility for the corruption taking place under the Coalition Administration, as laughable, since several AFC Ministers have significant portfolios to play.

He outlined that during, Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder’s tenure, Guyanese have witnessed the “help” withdrawn from rice farmers, an excess of $800M from drainage and irrigation and farm to market roads being cut from the Budget, a significant increase of water and land charges from $3,500 per acre per year to $15,000 for the same period, in addition to 7000 persons being rendered jobless as a result of the closure of several sugar estates.

Moreover, Business Minister, Dominic Gaskin was accused of doing nothing to help the growth of the Business community.

Furthermore, AFC Party Leader, Raphael Trotman- who is also the Natural Resources Minister-, Jagdeo says, may have squandered a historic opportunity for Guyanese through his poor negotiations with oil giant, ExxonMobil.

In addition, Jagdeo asserted that Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan continues to live in a bubble with regards to the crime rate.

“Khemraj Ramjattan, another leader of the AFC is totally lost in fighting crime. He gives excuses, he whips out a series of statistics, showing some reduction in crime and I really believe the statistics now are fudged, when you compare that with the reality of what’s happening.”

The Opposition Leader also posited that the Prime Minister, Nagamoottoo is now playing a crucial part of ‘selling dreams’ to Guyanese through his campaign for LGE, while asserting that he does very little and “just lives off of taxpayers’ money.” (Ramona Luthi)

I would like to ask Dr. Jagdeo what shape the PPP is in to say what the AFC is in a sad shape. May I remind you, Mr. Jagdeo, that the AFC is still part of the governing coalition of Guyana. The old saying is still the wisdom of today to take care of your own home before telling anyone their home is in bad shape.

Let me go further and say that Anil Nandlall allegedly calls poor people "parasite" and he was hammered by Facebook viewers. I leave him busy defending himself and changing his mouth of what he really meant. Is it him that Jagdeo has in mind to be PPP presidential candidate?

Toothless and a PNC doormat. Seems that even though you can read "lil bit", you are unable to comprehend and visualize the whole picture.

Exactly ! There is an old saying "where ignorance is bliss, it's a folly to be wise"; that applies perfectly in this instance !

The PNC has a plan for everyone of them including Moses and Khemraj.  Agreeing to give the AFC 40% of the government was just a big bribe to get the big prize - that is getting into power.  Once in power the game started to change. The AFC can go to hell now.  Their brains was smart enough fool some of the people but not smart enough to control the PNC.

You guys are busy talking about the AFC. Why not focus on the PPP? The PPP is out of office and has gameplay to reenter any time soon. Jagdeo is at the helm talking balls every day. Yall taking care of other people's house, too?

Do you think before you type your nonsense here? Why do you focus on the PPP when you are a PPP hater? Why do you care if Jagdeo is talking balls every day? Is he talking about your balls to be so concerned? Take care of your house first before trying to take care of Jagdeo's or the PPP's house.

I guess the PPP (the opposition party of Guyana) is a private matter to Skeldon_man alone. Bravo!

Like I said before, you need to fully engage your half brain. Comprehension is not a function of your half brain.

Race politics is not part of the AFC party. This has appealed to the young voters. Funny, it's the old racists preaching the doomsday for the AFC.

Even Jagdeo is hoping like his fellow renegades that AFC will fail to give rise to the PPP. This is when the PPP General Secretary ran out of strategy and confidence of his own party.

Hey Mits,

Stop being like D2 and using race as an excuse. The AFC is yet to prove itself and Granger played a master stroke by asking the AFC to prove itself. The coalition ie the PNC wing of the coalition appears to have attracted young voters and the coalition failed to deliver for young people by appointing  a mountain of old men for top positions.

Let us see what the AFC is really worth after the LGE. I personally see a bunch of selfish AFC politicians who shoved aside their base as a result of greed.

The people will decide.

More than 1/3 of the world is run by coalition. It was the small AFC that forced the PPP bullies out of power. The AFC shall prevail. Racists like you will cause the PPP to loose again.

Mits, stay focused. We are talking about what the AFC brings to the coalition as of today and Granger was initially very generous to them so that he can get the main prize.

Granger is now squeezing the AFC ball*. He bluntly told them to paddle their own canoe and prove their value to the coalition.

I can assure you that Trotman is worth his value in terms of support. What does Moses and Ramjattan bring to the table ?

Granger and his coalition are asking that question and as I said before, the people will decide. From all indications and as recently indicated from Hinds, they are technically worthless and dead in the water.

It that your response ? It sounds a lot like Moses and Ramjattan. Empty and of no value. Have a good day.

Are you not entitled to your opinion? Is that a fallacy? You have been making more noises and you are louder that me.

I think that you are 3 years out of date.  The youth vote is of the impression that the AFC is either no different from the PNC, or lacks the power to have impact on the coalition.

Either way it doesn't reflect well on them.  I am not sure that the AFC has any more of a base than does the WPA.

I remember debating with Gerhard about the AFC's lack of infrastructure and even he admitted that there was merit to this.  I also remember Freddie K being very dissatisfied with the AFC's inability to properly host meetings without the massive help of APNU.

The idea that the AFC was a plausible choice for those who couldn't stomach the PNC (or APNU) has long gone.

The only choice that the average Guyanese has will be whether they hate the PPP more than they hate APNU, or vice versa.  No one thinks that the AFC has any influence in the coalition and the fact that the AFC feels compelled to contest the LGE on its own proves this.

Let us hope for their sake that this doesn't expose the fact that they lack a base, and that elections in Guyana remain an ethnic census.
