Planning a trip to Guyana after many years for a visit in April. I am going with a friend and, I know its a big country, but unfortunately I will only be in Georgetown.  But planning a bigger trip next year.

Any suggestions for what I can do or where to go to learn about the culture, politics, social life etc of the country while I am there?

I am concerned about safety, of course.

Don't wear any expensive watch or jewelry and try not to walk on the streets after dark. Taxis are cheap to get around Georgetown US$2.50. Use them. Always be aware of your surroundings and be careful when buying stuff and taking money out of your pockets. Scotia Bank on Robb Street has an ATM to withdraw money from a foreign bank account. Not all banks have a connection to international accounts. Pegasus Poolside on Saturday nights have a nice crowd. Relaxing atmosphere. If you want a more club like atmosphere, go to Palm Court. Seeta's Bar on Station Street Kitty if you want cheaper beer. Strip club is Rio and a host of others with the best Latinas in town. Rio's is built on a property where my father had a business place many years ago. Botanical gardens on Sunday afternoon. You can go to the Seven Ponds and piss on Burnham's grave for Nehru and a few other folks. Pandama Winery on the Linden Highway. They have a winery and a creek. Splashmin's Creek if you want to be among a more boisterous crowd. Chinese restaurants galore. Posh one at Providence, New Thriving. Kamboat on Albert Street, mid level and tasty food. Take away, The Hilton in Campbellville. The Brazilian restaurant on Alexander Street by Bourda Market, good food. Shanta's on Camp and New Market, food still decent. The next block up from Shanta's on Thomas and Newmarket Street has better pouri. Around the corner from Shanta's on Newmarket Street is a place called Maggie's. Decent food and good pastries. My friend used to own that property long ago. Around the corner is the Promenade Gardens where Riff is sending you. Walk down the block and visit the President and Dr. Nagamootoo on Main Street.

Next time you go, head out of town. Lethem and all of the Rupunini is great. Go to Manari Ranch and tell them I sent you.

I will give it to you straight up. Think of it as going to Mars on a one-way trip. No one dare come to me and say that I am insensitive.  He asked for suggestions and he gets my opinion.

Vish, you can call a taxi service and they will come for you. It's actually cheaper when you call a taxi than if you hail one on the street. Use a recognized company. The biggest one is probably Cyril's and the number is 227-2900 or 226-6300. They have cars all over GT on the road and the dispatcher will send a car to you within a few minutes as the city is small.
