The exclusion of long-time Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) member, Aubrey Norton from the next parliament appears to be causing ripples in some sections of the party.

Sources close to Norton say that some of his supporters in Linden and Plaisance are disgruntled that he has not been selected to be one of the representatives of the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) in the National Assembly.

Plans are underway to picket APNU’s ‘Thank You’ meeting scheduled to be held in the coming days if Norton is not included
That source said Norton’s followers are peeved because he almost single-handedly did much of the political work together with Sharma Sulaiman, tipped to be an MP, to secure APNU’s landslide victory in Region 10.

Insiders believe that Norton--a qualified and experienced politician, political scientist and Foreign Policy expert- has been excluded because of a rift between himself and Corbin.
“ The two of them have not been talking for years but there was a threat over the APNU to lose Linden to the PPPC and Aubrey decided that he had no time with fighting,” said the source. Though PNCR Chairman, Cammie Ramsaroop is APNU’s Representative of the List, the two sources say Corbin is still wielding considerable influence over the process.

Norton to meet APNU selection-panel over exclusion from parliament

Long-time Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) member, Aubrey Norton is expected to be summoned to a meeting later Monday to discuss his exclusion from parliament to represent the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

Well-placed sources told Demerara Waves Online (www.demwaves.com) that APNU Chairman, David Granger and APNU Vice Chairman Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine agreed to hold talks with Norton at a more than two-hour meeting with disgruntled pro-Norton supporters at Congress Place headquarters.
“We met with a group from Linden and they expressed their disappointments and his contributions to Linden. They were very direct and straightforward and we have undertaken their views with our colleagues,” another well-placed source told Demwaves.com
It is unclear whether the talks with Norton could be held Monday because of scheduled committments.
The source said Norton is expected to meet with the full selection panel comprised of Granger, Roopnaraine, PNCR Leader, Robert Corbin; Leader of the National Front Alliance, Keith Scott and Representative of APNU's list, Cammmie Ramsaroop.

The 35 persons from Linden and Plaisance threatened to pull out from organising an APNU 'Thank You' meeting scheduled for tomorrow in the bauxite mining town. They are also considering picketing the meeting if favourabole deal is not struck.

Sources said the group insisted that Norton be included among the 26 APNU parliamentarians to sit in the 65 seat National Assembly.

No specific explanation was, according to the source, given to the group for Norton's exclusion. "This was done after careful deliberation and consideration of the list," the source related.

On the factor of excluding persons who would have served more than 10 years, Granger and Roopnaraine were told that Norton was an MP from 1998 1998 to 2001 and 2006 to 2011.

The conditions for selection are said to be attendance, balance in a number of areas, code of service to constituents and APNU, competence to serve as a shadow minister, he/she must reside in the region or selected by persons therein and must be qualified for membership of the National Assembly.
Some sources believe that Corbin might have had a major hand in Norton's exclusion because of a major fall-out some years ago over the transparency of internal elections.

But Norton's supporters believe that he should be handsomely rewarded for playing a major role in APNU winning Region 10 by a landslide in the November 28 National and Regional Elections.

Aubrey Norton is among the most qualified and competent persons to be an MP. He campaigned hard for APNU, especially in his hometown Linden, where it is alleged that Corbin was "persona non gratia".
APNU is already revealing its true colours, that is, APNU is really PNC in disguise with a few power-hungry WPA remnants. Corbin is still in charge.

As leader of the Opposition Corbin is still in charge, and if any of his subordinate doesn't do as he wishes, he may use the recall legislation to replace them...in other words...he has on a string....

it is the system we have and another deficit of our electoral system. The nation needs to be voting for the president and their representatives directly. This party selecting process leads to patronage.
