Associates of three opposition activists who were arrested in connection with the painting of anti-Jagdeo slogans on several roadways are upset that most lawyers have abandoned them in a police lock-up.
“I don’t have, it is to my mind unconscionable,” a senior opposition figure told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) when asked why little legal input has been provided.
Those held at the Timehri Police station lock-up are Paul Lewis,50, Alwyn Greenidge,20, and 48-year old Denise Miller.
The trio was picked up during the early hours of Friday at the junction of the Timehri Public Road and Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
An associate of the detainees told Demerara Waves that he was upset that none of the battery of opposition-affiliated lawyers has visited the trio. Feeling disillusioned, he said the little or no feeling of legal representation offered no encouragement or motivation to other activists.
“People must feel that if anything happen to them, PNC will be on your case,” he said.
Attorney-at-Law, Llewelyn John,85, who spent the night at the Timehri Police Station overlooking the interests of the detainees, sought to play down the absence of other lawyers.
At the same time, he felt that the opposition should do more to seize the opportunity. “People don’t seem to understand that a dangerous precedent in which you wouldn’t be able to mark or paint anything,” he said.
The slogans, one of which read “For heaven’s sake go Jagdeo,” surfaced Friday morning, just hours before an Appreciation Ceremony was held for outgoing President, Bharrat Jagdeo. He is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election for a third straight term. Policemen were quickly deployed to blot out the signs on the junction of University of Guyana Road and Railway Embankment, Mandela Avenue and in the vicinity of Banks DIH.

It is one thing to put up posters but another to deface public property. I don't believe you creeps are in agreement with destruction of public property for the sake of political expression.
