STABROEK NEWS, NOV 10 --- APNU this afternoon said it was enraged by President Donald Ramotar’s decision to prorogue Parliament.

The APNU statement follows:

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is enraged at President Donald Ramotar’s promulgation of a proclamation to prorogue parliament on Monday 10th November 2014. This is the darkest day for democracy in Guyana.

This ‘Proclamation’ has effectively paralysed the parliamentary process and smothered the voices of the people’s legitimate representatives in the National Assembly. It is an affront to the Guyanese people who three years ago, in November 2011, voted for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) to have the majority of seats in the National Assembly.

resident Ramotar has now single-handedly engineered a constitutional crisis. The main purposes of the ‘Proclamation’ are to allow the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to avoid parliamentary scrutiny while it attempts to:

  • prevent debate on the Opposition ‘no-confidence’ motion;
  • prevent the holding of local government elections;
  • prevent debate on financial excesses and impropriety;
  • protect the reputations of his Ministers from parliamentary sanction;
  • permit the PPP’s campaign for general and regional elections to proceed;
  • permit the continued expenditure of state funds without parliamentary scrutiny.

The President’s ‘Proclamation’ to prorogue parliament is a challenge to the entire nation. He has no grounds for his crude smothering of parliamentary independence.

APNU will not accept this denial of democracy and will not be intimidated by the PPP/C’s dictatorial behaviour.

PNU is resolved to resist the President’s ‘Proclamation’. APNU calls on all the good people of Guyana everywhere to join in a civil movement for the restoration of parliamentary democracy by peacefully resisting the PPP/C’s resort to dictatorship and to call for the revocation of this ‘Proclamation’.

Opposition, Speaker condemn suspension of Parliament

A group of APNU supporters listening to a public meeting by Opposition Leader, David Granger and Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine of the Working People's Alliance

DEMERARA WAVES, NOV 10 --- In address to the Nation, Mr Ramotar defended his decision to prorogue the Parliament for a maximum of six months on grounds, saying that it was the sole recourse he had to preserve the life of the law-making body and create an opening for further talks with the Opposition.

The combined opposition- A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) - say they will talk with the President only after the prorogation ends swiftly, rather than the full six months that is allowed under the constitution.

While  the 32 government parliamentarians , as expected, did not turn up for the scheduled sitting, the Opposition’s 33 took up their seats and were updated by House Speaker Raphael Trotman who called the President’s move , distasteful, unfortunate, illegal and “most undemocratic.”

Trotman, who is from the opposition Alliance For Change (AFC), says President Ramotar’s prorogation will lead Guyana down a historic path either for good or bad.

Opposition Leader, David Granger says President Ramotar’s suspension of the Parliament is aimed at avoiding oversight by the Opposition-controlled National Assembly…

Even as mainly Afro-Guyanese supporters of Granger’s A Partnership for National Unity picketed outside Parliament Building, Leader of the Alliance For Change Khemraj Ramjattan cautioned against street protests because it will cause East Indo-Guyanese to consolidate their support of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic.

APNU is just running their mouths playing politics.  Where are the corrupt PPP officials? How come none of them have been brought to trial for corruption,  How come PPP ministers can create criminal acts and not be punished, or make death threats and get away.

APNU just likes crisis so they can pretend to be doing something.

The PPP is funny.  They had 3 years to talk to the opposition, and now they think that the next 6 months will be different.

If Ramotar has any guts he will announce elections tomorrow.  If he doesn't we will know that he is afraid.  A scenario of APNU 40%, PPP 35% and AFC 25% is has petrified him.  Maybe they need time to burn down more Ministries to hide their records, and then blame the PNC.  Yes we haven't forgotten those days.

Why doesn't Ramjattan bring out his Indian protestors to join the African.  Then there is no way that the PPP will be able to send hooligans to attack Indians.

Apparently APNU and the AFc might as well resign and hand every thing over to the PPP then.  They cant develop economic plans and campaign to win the support of the people.  They cant dash corrupt PPP politicians in court.

What can they do, and what use are they?

If Solomon was head of the PNC you bet that they would figure out a way to do something other than getting 50 old women to carry placards.

Yes must give Mr Solomon for the economic plans.

Great point. AFC has talked the talk. It must also walk the walk.

With no parliament now, AFC cannot depend on press conferences and news releases. People want action!
