Suspected Buxton gang member freed of attempted murder

Two of the three charges instituted against David Leander, to wit, attempted murder and possession of cannabis, were last week dropped, when he appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs at the Providence Magistrate’s Court. Leander was represented by attorney at law Basil Williams.
The matters had been pending since November 2007.
It was alleged that Leander attempted to murder Randy Joseph when he discharged a loaded firearm at the man on October 14, 2007 at Buxton, East Coast Demerara. The other charge read that Leander had in his possession five grams of cannabis on October 30, at Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
According to Williams, the matters were dismissed because the prosecution lacked the evidence to convict Leander of these crimes.
David Leander, known as “Biscuit”, was also fingered in the killing of Agriculture Minister, Satyadeow Sawh, who was gunned down when a group of heavily armed men invaded his La Bonne Intention home.
The Minister’s two siblings and a security guard were also killed when the men invaded the home.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, Mr. Basil Williams noted that these charges were “trumped up” after his client was accusing members of the force of “torture”.
The lawyer added that his client had always proclaimed his innocence. It is finally being revealed that Leander is innocent, Williams said.
When the accused was first brought to court there were signs that he had received a severe beating from someone. Leander had to be helped into the court by police officers who were in courtroom.
His lawyer had told the court that he was shot and tortured by the police. After the charges were read, his lawyer told the magistrate that blood was oozing from Leander’s ear.
Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton then gave her orderly a piece of tissue and asked him to put it there to see if it was indeed blood.  After following instructions, the magistrate assessed that it was not blood, but some other liquid.
Submissions which were made by Basil Williams had stated that his client was beaten, tortured and drugged while in police custody.
Williams had noted to the court that his client could only sit upright with the help of others. He also said that Leander cannot walk on his own his strength.
Williams told the court that the police had told him and Leander’s family that his client is responsible for all the unsolved murders on the East Coast of Demerara, including that of Agriculture Minister Satyadeow Sawh.
The murder charge is currently being heard at the Sparendaam’s Magistrate’s Court.
